{"id":83022,"date":"2022-10-07T06:56:05","date_gmt":"2022-10-07T06:56:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tin.happy-projects.ro\/wood-energy-european-forest-industry-reacts-amendments-voted-european-parliament\/"},"modified":"2025-09-19T08:58:21","modified_gmt":"2025-09-19T08:58:21","slug":"wood-energy-european-forest-industry-reacts-amendments-voted-european-parliament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.timberindustrynews.com\/ro\/wood-energy-european-forest-industry-reacts-amendments-voted-european-parliament\/","title":{"rendered":"Wood energy: European forest industry reacts to the amendments voted by the European Parliament"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The EU Parliament recently voted on numerous initiatives that will have a significant impact on the sawmill and timber industry in the years to come.\u00a0In Strasbourg in mid-September, several texts concerning forests and wood were on the program of the parliamentary debate.<\/p>\n<p>After having notably adopted a position on the future \"zero deforestation, zero forest degradation\" regulation, the European Parliament considered the revision of the directive on renewable energies.\u00a0By 418 votes for, 109 against and 111 abstentions, MEPs voted to increase the share of renewable energies in the EU's overall energy consumption to 45% by 2030. In this context, the European Parliament adopted amendments calling for the gradual reduction of the share of primary wood considered as renewable energy.<\/p>\n<p>Against this background, the German Sawmill and Timber Industry Association (DeSH),\u00a0Land&amp;Forst Betriebe Austria,\u00a0many forestry associations in France and the Swedish Forest Industries Federations expressed their concerns.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Germany and Austria\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The German Sawmill and Timber Industry Association (DeSH) emphasizes the importance of sustainable wood energy in combination with wood products.<\/p>\n<p>\"T<em>he revision of the RED II will have a decisive influence on whether the federal government will achieve its goal of achieving a 50 percent share of renewable heat by 2030,\"<\/em>\u00a0comments DeSH Managing Director Julia M\u00f6bus.\u00a0<em>\u201cToday, the contribution of renewables in the heat sector is just 16.5 percent.\u00a0More than three quarters of this is provided by wood.\u00a0With the decision to revoke the status of renewable energy for forest wood as \u201cprimary biomass\u201d, there is a risk that the climate targets will be missed by a wide margin.\u00a0The abolition of subsidies would also have serious effects on the operators of wood-fired power plants and ultimately on consumers.\u00a0In view of the current energy crisis, that would be a fatal signal.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/timberindustrynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Lg-Wood-Chips-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6100\" src=\"https:\/\/timberindustrynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Lg-Wood-Chips-2-300x194.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 413px) 100vw, 413px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/timberindustrynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Lg-Wood-Chips-2-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/timberindustrynews.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Lg-Wood-Chips-2.jpg 700w\" alt=\"\" width=\"413\" height=\"267\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>M\u00f6bus is also critical of the regulation on deforestation-free supply chains:\u00a0<em>\u201cContrary to urgent calls for practicality, the EU has created additional hurdles.\u00a0In view of the pending negotiations between Parliament, the Council and the Commission, we therefore continue to advocate a balance of interests that brings the objectives of the regulation to an appropriate implementation.\u00a0For the revision of RED II, however, this means a commitment to sustainable wood energy.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<p>With regard to the EU forest strategy, Land&amp;Forst Betriebe Austria noticed slight improvements in the parliamentary position compared to the proposal of the EU Commission.\u00a0Parliament underlined the responsibility of the Member States for forest issues, spoke out clearly in favor of existing indicators and processes and called for a better balance between the ecological, economic and social priorities of the strategy.\u00a0Nevertheless, difficult points remain in the program, such as unresolved questions of definitions (\"Old Growth Forests\" etc.).<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cIn Austria, wood is not burned senselessly, but is an important building block for value creation in the country and for achieving the ambitious climate goals.\u00a0We can therefore not afford to do without it.\u00a0The fact that the EU is now belittling this achievement or even calling it into question is the wrong way to go!\u00a0It is now up to the member states in the Council to iron out these issues and to develop a technically well-founded solution for the future away from ideological discussions,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0demands Felix Montecuccoli, President of Land&amp;Forstbetriebe \u00d6sterreich.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Fran\u021ba<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The European Parliament position, unsurprisingly, did not fail to make professional organizations in France's forest-wood sector react.<\/p>\n<p><em>\"The European Parliament has voted<\/em>\u00a0[...]<em>in favor of increasing the share of renewable energies in EU energy consumption from 32% to 45% by 2030. It is disconnected from the realities on the ground. In France, wood energy, a co-product logging, is essential for the proper management of our forests.
