How much longer will the planets remain aligned for the oak tree?\u00a0At the beginning of September 2022, this is the question that many professionals are asking because the oak tree continues to float in the Ether as if the turbulence of the world did not concern it.\u00a0Time will certainly provide an answer, but for now the conclusion is clear: oak prices have just broken historic records.<\/p>\n

At the first autumn sales, in particular those of Burgundy, the prices on the vine exceed all that the sector has known until now.\u00a0Could we imagine that 3 m3 oak trees which were worth on average around \u20ac200\/m3 (1) in autumn 2020 would be trading for \u20ac400\/m3 two years later?\u00a0These figures result from analyzes of the ONF auction in Ch\u00e2tenoy-le-Royal (Sa\u00f4ne-et-Loire), on September 6th.\u00a0This emblematic sale, which previously traditionally took place in Beaune (C\u00f4te d'Or), sets the tone for the rest of the sales campaign.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Office\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>offered a relatively sparse catalog (19,000 m3), but in the general opinion of a high quality of products characterized by an average tree volume of 3 m3 and presenting a high A\/B\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>percentage .\u00a0The very low unsold rate (2.5% in volume) and an increase in the number of tenders over 1 year confirms continued strong demand from sawyers.<\/span><\/p>\n

This rarely experienced dynamism translates into price levels never reached in Burgundy.\u00a0\u201cIn average prices, we are at +34% compared to the historic threshold of 2018\u201d<\/em>\u00a0, specifies Jimmy Equenot.\u00a0The sales manager for wood and services at the ONF of Bourgogne Franche-Comt\u00e9 adds that the increase over one year is 17%.\u00a0\"The market is in line with what we experienced during the first\u00a0<\/em><\/span>half of the year\"<\/em><\/span>\u00a0, adds Jimmy Equenot\u00a0<\/span>.<\/sup><\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

According to our calculations (see table below), the 2 m3 logs which sold on average \u20ac210\/m3 in September 2021 are now trading on the basis of \u20ac270\/m3.\u00a0Over 1 year, the increase amounts to 30%.\u00a0Over 2 years, the progression is impressive: +80%!\u00a0The trend is the same in thicker woods.\u00a0The 4 m3 oaks, which used to start at \u20ac375\/m3, now cost \u20ac450\/m3, an increase of 20% over 1 year and 69% over 2 years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some professionals are still surprised by this new explosion in the purchase price of oak.\u00a0This is the case of David Chavot.\u00a0\u201cI was expecting some caution from buyers, but I see that prices have increased by another 30% since last fall, which puts us at the level of prices for this spring.\u00a0<\/em>The director of Margaritelli France pleads for a small tariff relaxation which would be welcome, in particular on the intermediate qualities\u00a0.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, a certain uncertainty reigns among the sawyers.\u00a0On the one hand, the order books are full until the end of the year, the coopers are once again hungry for staves, the under-rail devices are working well... On the other hand, signals of a slowdown are coming from certain showrooms in floors, a few stud businesses.\u00a0Moreover, Chinese demand is weakening.<\/span><\/p>\n

But in the profession, the big concern at the moment comes from the exponential increases in gas and electricity prices which are likely to cause significant damage in 2023. If we add to this the prospects for a general erosion of consumption , we will understand that reality could soon catch up with a sector that is hovering on its little cloud.\u00a0The real question for sawyers today is to know up to what levels oak prices will be accepted by the market?\u00a0And for how much longer?<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
