Finland's sawn timber market is facing something new, as the demand has declined during the spring.\u00a0In January-June, the export of sawn timber from Finland decreased by six percent from the previous year.\u00a0Almost 4.5 million cubic meters of lumber were exported to the world.<\/p>\n

The sawn timber boom that started in the first corona year, or the corona boom, is waning.\u00a0This was not yet visible in the June export price, which was just under 400 euros per cubic meter.\u00a0The point of fading should already be visible in the export price.\u00a0There is a downward correction movement ahead.<\/p>\n

In the corona crisis, demand has been consistently clearly greater than supply.\u00a0As a result, lumber prices have remained high.\u00a0Now that the demand turned down, the prices will follow.<\/p>\n

The vast majority of sawn timber is used for construction, so its development is key in terms of the demand for sawn timber.\u00a0The outlook for construction has darkened at the same pace as the general economic outlook.\u00a0The economic outlook is particularly weighed down by inflation and rising interest rates, which weaken consumers' purchasing power.\u00a0The costs of building materials and construction have also increased, which affects construction activity.<\/p>\n

With the support of ongoing construction projects, sawn timber sales in Finland will remain moderate this year.\u00a0For next year, the prolonged decline in the number of permits indicates a decrease in construction.\u00a0The outlook is similar in other parts of Europe as well as in North America and Asia.<\/p>\n

While the market situation is changing, we are living in a time of renewal in the Finnish sawmill industry.\u00a0In the current quarter, Mets\u00e4 Fiber starts the large sawmill in Rauma and closes the medium-sized sawmill in Kyr\u00f6.\u00a0Next year, several independent sawmills will start new or renewed saw lines and expansions.\u00a0Junnikkala Oy's sawmill in Oulu is scheduled to start up in 2024.<\/p>\n

All these investments are important and support the efficiency of the Finnish sawmill industry.\u00a0Improving efficiency supports international competitiveness.\u00a0They are especially important in a weakening market situation, which tightens competition.<\/p>\n

In the corona recession, the price of lumber rose at a completely different pace than the price of logs.\u00a0It remains to be seen how the looming price of lumber will affect the price of logs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
