For Sweden's largest sawmill group, Vida, a price increase of SEK 1\/kWh on the electricity price means around SEK 170 million (EUR 16 million) on an annual basis.\u00a0This corresponds to a cost increase of 10 percent.\u00a0In the short term, price hedging and production cuts mitigate the cost shock.\u00a0As previously announced, during the autumn, Vida will reduce production by 15 percent.\u00a0The Canadian forestry giant Canfor owns 70% of\u00a0Vida Group.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

''The reduction is driven more by a declining market than by high electricity prices.\u00a0We planned for reduced production even before electricity prices really skyrocketed.\u00a0But it is clear that the electricity price will affect our production over time.\u00a0We have one half of our operations in electricity area SE3 and the other in SE4.\u00a0There, it looks as if electricity prices will be high for a long time,'' says Jonas Axelsson, technical director at the Vida Group.<\/p>\n

Electricity prices in both SE3 and SE4, central and southern Sweden, rose even before the invasion of Ukraine worsened the situation even more.\u00a0In recent years, the risk of power shortages in southern Sweden has also increased during the summer.\u00a0Higher costs for electricity have, thanks to exceptionally good demand and high prices for sawn goods, not hit the sawmills' production so hard until now.<\/p>\n

''We have been in a period of very good profitability.\u00a0Now that the prices of our products are moving towards normalization, the cost increases on electricity will hit much harder,'' says Jonas Axelsson.<\/p>\n

Price-guaranteed electricity contracts have dampened the financial effects of doubled electricity prices for Vida's twelve sawmills.\u00a0But as the price hedges expire, the exposure to the significantly higher forward electricity prices for the coming years increases.\u00a0The sawmills need to adapt to higher costs for electricity.<\/p>\n

''We have had low electricity prices for a long time and now we have to adapt and improve efficiency.\u00a0Within the framework of Vida's sustainability work, we already have a program for energy efficiency.\u00a0The entire [Swedish] sawmill industry will have to work more with its electricity use, but also look at new electricity production in various forms.\u00a0For example, we have signed an agreement for deliveries of solar electricity that will cover ten percent of the group's electricity needs.\u00a0It is absolutely crucial that new fossil-free electricity production gets in place quickly, and for that political action is needed.\u00a0Right now, the expansion is going far too slowly,'' says Jonas Axelsson<\/p>\n

Higher costs for electricity are not only putting pressure on the Swedish sawmills, but also on manufacturers of other building materials.\u00a0The cost of producing steel and concrete is also increasing.\u00a0It can give sawn timber products a competitive advantage and thus improved export opportunities.<\/p>\n

''Wood has many advantages.\u00a0Not least, it is a climate-smart alternative to more energy-demanding building materials.\u00a0Sawn timber products have a bright future.\u00a0But we have to adapt to the market.\u00a0At the moment, this means that we reduce production and improve energy efficiency,'' says Jonas Axelsson.<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
