Due to the hot, dry summer, there is a correspondingly large amount of wood damaged by bark beetles, or resulted from storms. Although Upper Austria has so far been spared from major storms, the current situation has meant that roundwood prices have also been reduced here by ten to 15 euros per cubic metre. The leading range of spruce quality class B, Media 2b+ currently achieves prices of 102 to 104 euros per cubic meter.<\/p>\n<p>The Austrian construction industry is also noticeably weakening. Sales of building products made of wood and lumber have decreased significantly. The Austrian sawmill industry is also sufficiently stocked with softwood sawlogs due to strong deliveries in the 2nd quarter. Demand is correspondingly low at the moment. Longer company holidays and inspection shutdowns to stabilize the market that were announced over the summer months have also dampened demand.<\/p>\n<p>The reason for the \"weakening construction industry\" is the aftermath of the COVID-19 crisis, Ukraine war, ongoing interruptions in supply chains, rising consumer prices and the tightening of central bank monetary policy are dampening global economic development. Compared to other national economies, a smaller decline is forecast for Austria, as the economic slowdown in the industrial sector is partially offset by the positive development in the tourism industry.<\/p>\n<p>The demand for pulpwood, energy and fuel wood is completely contrary, and benefits from the necessary maintenance and thinning interventions. Less sawmill by-products are also available due to the lower amount of sawlog cutting. At the same time, Austria's larger heating plants are building up storage and there were no summer shutdowns of CHP plants this year. Accordingly, the prices for pulpwood and energy wood are at an attractive level.
