This is the result of a decrease in softwood lumber imports from Canada.

In the months from January to April, US softwood lumber imports totaled 11.72 million m³. As data published by the FAS show, this corresponds to a 6.8% decrease compared to the same period of last year. Shipments from Europe increased from 116,000 m³ in 2021 to 134,000 m³ this year (+15%).

The decrease is mainly the result of one country, i.e. Canada. With a total of around 9.8 million m³, US imports from its neighbor fell by 9.8% or 1.07 million m³ compared to the first four months of 2021. All other supplying countries, such as Germany (683,000 m³; +4.9%) or Sweden (320,000 m³; +32.6%), shipped more softwood lumber across the Atlantic. Imports from Romania (142,600 m³; +29.9%) and New Zealand (71,200 m³; +10.5%), for example, recorded double-digit increases, while imports from the Czech Republic were up by 148%, totaling around 45,000 m³.

Softwood lumber imports USA | January – April 2022

Country

2022

2021

Change in %

Canada

9,797,529

10,866,764

-9.84

Germania

683,323

651,155

4.94

Sweden

320,715

241,928

32.57

Brazilia

188,725

172,917

9.14

Austria

146,834

141,409

3.84

Romania

142,589

109,783

29.88

Chile

84,500

71,931

17.47

New Zealand

71,205

64,453

10.48

Republica Cehă

44,853

18,093

147.9

Russian Federation

34,519

32,206

7.18

Other

203,417

204,327

-0.45

Total

11,718,209

12,574,966

-6.81

From January to April, US import volumes fell by nearly 7% or 860,000 m³.
