North American lumber futures are toppling to levels not seen since November amid fears of a softening housing market and economic recession. Futures fell as low as $604.50 per 1,000 board feet in Chicago on Wednesday, extending a slump to about 46% this year. The commodity\u2019s collapse is a stark reversal from all-time highs set in 2021 during a pandemic-fueled homebuilding boom.<\/p>\n

\u201cLumber markets are probing for a floor,\u201d\u00a0said Kevin Mason, managing director of ERA Forest Products Research, noting concerns about collapsing home sales and rising interest rates are pushing prices lower.<\/p>\n

Recent\u00a0comments\u00a0by JPMorgan Chase\u00a0 & Co.\u2019s Chief Executive Officer Jamie Dimon\u00a0aren\u2019t helping, Mason said. Earlier on Wednesday, he warned investors to prepare for an economic \u201churricane,\u201d given challenges including tightening monetary policy and Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Lumber prices may fall in the range of $400 per 1,000 board feet in the next two months before producers curb production to remove excess supply, Mason said.<\/p>\n

Lumber buyers have slowed orders and wood is piling up at mills, which are\u00a0weighing on prices.<\/p>\n

But barring a recession, Matthew Saunders of John Burns Real Estate Consulting said\u00a0he does not expect lumber prices to fall all the way back to pre-COVID levels, which rarely exceeded $500 per 1,000 board feet, due to the many problems in Canada's western forests, where mills have struggled with fires, floods, high prices and hard-to-get timber.<\/p>\n
