The decline is due to the shutdown of the two Russian sawmills at the beginning of March. While the development at Stora Enso is clouded by the sale of the Russian sawmills, Binderholz continues to catch up.

The European number 2 officially took over BSW Timber in January 2022. All European Binderholz sawmills are expected to produce 4.7 million m3 (+7%) this year. Including the two US sawmill locations, Binderholz is planning an output of 5.1 million m3 according to its own statements.

From 12 to 3

Vida Wood made it to 3rd place. Last year, the subsidiary of Canfor, the world's largest sawmill group, rose from 12th place to this position due to acquisitions and production increases. In 2022, the Swedish company wants to increase its production by 4% to almost 2.7 million m3.

Planned production +52%

Mayr-Melnhof Holz manages to jump to fourth place. The main reason for this improvement is the purchase of the three Swedish Bergkvist Siljan sites in February. Thus, the planned production increased by 52% to almost 2.6 million m3 .

Without the three new locations, the company would be in 12th place with a lumber production of 1.7 million m3 . The estimate for the Russian location Efimovskiy is uncertain, because the production there cannot be estimated at all due to the current upheavals.

SCA Timber is in 5th place. Their total production is expected to increase by an estimated 5% to 2.4 million m3 in 2022. The company thus moves up one rank.

Many changes at HS Timber

There is a lot going on at the HS Timber Group, the formerly Holzindustrie Schweighofer Group. No sawmill company had so many changes in 2021 and 2022. HS Timber closed the sawmill in Radauti/RO and the panel factory in Siret/RO on March 30th. Despite the newly acquired Luvian Saha sawmill in Finland, a nominal decline of 7% to just under 2 million m3 is expected for this year. In addition, new construction in Belarus had to be stopped in March. Construction of a sawmill began in Argentina in the same month.

Metsä Fiber will only be able to produce around 1.5 million m 3 this year. Production will start at the new location in Rauma/FI in the third quarter. According to Metsä, Rauma is set to become “the most modern sawmill in the world”. However, there will be two sawmill closures this year: Production in Kyrö/FI will probably be stopped in summer 2022. The Russian location in Svir has also been in place since March.

German sawmills turn up

Measured by the percentage increase in production, the developments at Ante-holz and the Rettenmeier Group catch the eye in addition to Mayr-Melnhof. Ante-holz is expected to increase its production in 2022 by 29% to 1.9 million m3. The main reason for this is the takeover of the new location in Rötenbach/DE in June 2021. The lumber production of Rettenmeier Holzindustrie is expected to increase by a further 15% to almost 2.4 million m3.

Largest single location in Bavaria

The Ziegler Group operates the larges single sawmill with the highest production in Europe. If the OK for the takeover of the two Swedish sawmills is received, Ziegler will move up to 15th place. In 2022 it is expected to produce 1.2 million m 3 at the headquarters in Plößberg/ DE.
