The production rate is strong, prices remain at high levels and also appear to continue to rise in terms of wood products, packaging materials and pulp. That analysis is made by the Swedish Forest Industries Federation (Skogsindustrierna).

''There were expectations of continued but declining growth in the world economy. These prospects have been shattered by China's zero tolerance policy towards covid and the war in Ukraine. The forest industry has done well so far this year. In the future, however, the industry may be more significantly affected by the bottlenecks in logistics, the markedly higher transport and energy prices and a generally weaker global demand,'' says Kerstin Hallsten, chief economist at Skogsindustrierna.

Demand for Swedish wood products remains high. In 2021, the Swedish sawmills broke production records. Deliveries continued to be at high levels in 2022, and in March the largest deliveries ever were achieved for a single month. During the first quarter of 2022, production was four percent higher compared to 2021.

''Sweden plays an important role by being able to offer Europe, and other parts of the world, an alternative to Russian wood products when Russian exports are restricted. How the market balance will then develop in the future is uncertain. Not least, it is uncertain what the influx of Russian wood products to Europe really looked like before the sanctions took full effect in early July,'' says Christian Nielsen, market analyst for wood products at Skogsindustrierna.

For graphic paper, weak profitability and closed mills have led to a decrease in production - and this decline is expected to continue. Up to and including April, production was 14 percent lower than the year before. The same trend is noticeable in the European market, where several mills are switching from the production of graphic paper to packaging materials. Reduced production capacity, increased energy costs and a prolonged strike in Finland have contributed to higher sales prices for Swedish graphic paper.

For packaging materials, average sales prices have increased in one year by between 20 and 30 percent. Increased costs for input goods and logistics, together with strong demand, have probably driven up prices. For example, pulp prices have risen rapidly and prices are now at new record levels, which directly affects mills that do not have their own pulp production. Pulp prices increased by 14 percent during the past year.

''If we look ahead, there are factors that speak for an increased demand for packaging materials. New investments are also being made in this industry, which provides an increased opportunity to meet growing demand. At the same time, there are clouds of unrest in the short term linked to bottlenecks and a generally weaker economy,'' says Katrin Heinsoo, market analyst for paper and pulp, Skogsindustrierna.

The Swedish forest industry is doing well.
