The development shows an increase of 4.3% compared to the previous month and of 81.2% compared to May 2021.

Normally, the price of wood pellets reaches its low for the year in May and then slowly rises again. Nevertheless, pellets are still significantly cheaper than fossil fuels. The price advantage over gas and oil is almost 40%. A kilo of pellets costs 39.33 cents, which corresponds to 7.87 cents/kWh.

Strong demand and higher production costs

"Despite another record production in the first quarter of 2022 and a good raw material situation, the price for pellets did not fall as usual in the spring," explains Martin Bentele, Managing Director of the German Pellet Institute. "At the moment, two external factors are coming together that the industry has no influence on: In addition to the high electricity and fuel costs, which make production and trade more expensive, there is currently a strong trend among consumers to stockpile and thus extremely high seasonal demand" .

Regional prices

The regional differences in the price of pellets in May 2022 are as follows (decrease of 6 t): In southern Germany, pellets are the cheapest at €379.76/t, as in the last few months.
