During the first quarter of 2022, logging in Russia fell by 2.4%, from 70.7 million cubic meters to 68.9 million cubic meters. This happened due to the implementation of the country's log export ban from early 2022 and the decrease in demand of logs for plywood production.<\/p>\n

The Leningrad region saw the highest drop (34%), while the Irkutsk region saw a drop of 11.5%.\u00a0During the past five years, only in 2019 has been seen a reduction in deforestation in the first quarter (just under 1%, from 68.9 million to 68.3 million cubic meters).<\/p>\n

Yet, the decline in logging in the first quarter of 2022 is acceptable, as it increased by 3.4%, to 70.7 million cubic meters between January and March 2021.\u00a0Therefore, in the context of rising deforestation in 2021, the reduction in the first quarter of 2022 is a return to normal levels, compared to previous years.\u00a0In 2021, the annual timber harvest in Russia was 225 million cubic meters, which was 3.7% higher than in 2020.<\/p>\n

In March 2022, Russia's Ministry of Industry and Trade temporarily banned the sale of plywood raw materials to Europe and the United States, as a response to the Western sanctions against Russia, following the start of the war with Ukraine. As a result, Russian plywood mills and sawmills whose main products were exported to the European countries, have reduced their production in the Leningrad region.<\/p>\n

According to the Russian Association of Timber Construction (ADC), in June 2020, the price of one cubic meter of lumber in Russia was 1-13,000 rubles (193,94 EUR), and in June 2021 it exceeded 25,000 rubles (372,96 EUR). The jump in prices was due to a boom in the U.S. homebuilding market and constraints on Canadian lumber supplies, as well as an increase in wood construction in Russia.<\/p>\n

The price remained at this high level until the end of 2021. Furthermore, at the beginning of 2022, the price of lumber fell by about 10-15% to 22-24,000 rubles (328-358 EUR)\u00a0 per cubic meter. The latest statistics of April show that the lumber price fell to 18-20,000 rubles (268,5-298,5 EUR) per cubic meter. Prices could fall by a further 10% over the next two months as the domestic lumber market in Russia is oversupplied.<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
