Since 2020, Covid-19 lockdowns have had a huge downstream impact on the global timber supply chain, resulting in soaring freight rates and rising timber prices. Since the beginning of this year, ocean freight rates have been soaring and the impact on the timber supply side has been increasing. Mostly, current lockdowns in China have affected global\u00a0 shipments and the accumulation of empty containers in global ports has brought more pressure to the already tense timber supply chain.<\/p>\n

Port cargo piles up like a mountain in Germany<\/strong><\/p>\n

Many ports in Germany have congestion problems, and many ships have queued up in the port of Hamburg or Bremerhaven, waiting for days or even weeks to leave.<\/p>\n

Although the port is constantly arranging employees to work overtime to load and unload goods to cope with the congestion of containers and freighters, the capacity of the port cannot meet the freight demand, and the accumulation of goods is becoming more and more serious. But the worst is yet to come.<\/p>\n

\"The situation will deteriorate sharply in the next few weeks, and congestion and waiting will be even longer,\" said Nienemann, a professor at the Hamburg School of Business Administration.<\/p>\n

The serious shortage of port capacity has deteriorated the fragile timber supply chain again, and German timber raw materials exports to China may face another tightening of supply. At the same time, the chaos of ports and logistics will increase inflation, the high transportation costs will eventually be passed on to consumers, and the price of wood may be pushed up again.<\/p>\n

Supply chain pressure increases due to lockdown in Shanghai<\/strong><\/p>\n

Shanghai City is under lockdown which has resulted in serious cargo accumulation at the port. Shanghai Port is one of the important container ports in China and 20% of exports pass through the port. Cargo volumes are now exceeding port capacity and trucks with containers are backing up on highways and vessels arriving for cargo are being delayed at sea.<\/p>\n

If the outbreak in Shanghai continues China could face a logistics crisis. Global shipping companies and exporters in the eastern provinces of Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Anhui and Shanghai are turning to Ningbo Port in Zhejiang some three hours from Shanghai, to avoid the congestion at Shanghai Port.<\/p>\n

Once the restrictions in Shanghai are lifted, freight orders are expected to exceed the current export lag. If the Shanghai lockdown continues for a long time, China may face the most serious logistics disruption crisis since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 .<\/p>\n

Conclusion:<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the short term, it is difficult to alleviate the timber supply problems if China continues its strict lockdown policy. However, if the lockdown is lifted ocean transportation can recover rapidly.
