The pattern is recognizable from many industries right now, so even when it comes to biofuels. Erik Dahl, CEO of Vida Energi AB, says that Vida, like many others, is affected by the external situation, but that it is difficult to draw any major conclusions about the future.

Vida Energi is booming and can not increase its production even if there is currently a market for it, says CEO Erik Dahl. ''For our part, it still looks pretty good right now. We are affected because there iwass an influx of pellets from Russia into Europe. This means that the supply will be smaller, at least in the short term. Demand will be higher as supply from Russia decreases. Prices are rising both because of the war and because electricity prices have gone up. In general, we have of course noticed the price increases throughout the year, but it got even worse when the war started. It also affects our products. The combined heat and power plants like to produce as much as possible,'' he says.

Erik Dahl says that Vida Energi has received several inquiries from potentially new heating plant customers recently, but has not had the opportunity to receive more.''We have what we have and can not change anything in terms of production. We get the volumes and products that come from the sawmills and the forest.''

''Customers that we have had a relationship with for a long time, we try to satisfy. We have a certain number of customers here in southern Sweden, including the heating plants that are close to our sawmills. However, we can not bring in as many new customers. That's how you can sum it up,'' says Erik Dahl.

One of the largest in the country

Vida Energi is one of the Sweden's largest players in biofuels. Products that arise from both felling and further processing in the sawmills are processed into renewable energy in the form of wood chips and pellets. The business includes purchasing, processing, warehousing and sales. A large part of the turnover comes from the company's twelve own sawmills where its own heating and drying and hot water are produced. Other production is sold to heating plants and sawmill chips to external pulp and paper industry.

Vida Energi AB has sales of SEK 1.2 billion (EUR 113 million) and produces 65,000 tonnes of pellets and two million chip bales. Imports and exports do not constitute a large part of Vida Energi's trade.

The sawmills are running at full capacity

Raised prices do not mean that Vida Energi will lose customers - neither large nor small, says the CEO, who, on the other hand, believes that many customers are worried about the future.

''I think that many are insecure and may buy extra volumes. Then I think most of our customers of, for example, stable litter and pellets. I can imagine that many people become a little less wasteful with, for example, stable litter and try to use smaller volumes right now. When it comes to heating plants, there are those who have bought biofuel from the Baltics and Russia and they are directly affected by the situation, but we do not sell them that much,'' he says.

''When it comes to the future of Vida Energi, which is currently going for high pressure, there are several factors that affect,'' says Erik Dahl.

''We have not really seen the consequences of what is happening yet. But the biofuel industry has to do with heat, so we are always very much affected by the weather, not just by the situation in the world around us. Right now we are fully sawing everywhere, so as it looks now, we have a hard time increasing production even if there is a market for it,'' says the CEO.

About Vida AB

Vida AB is the largest privately owned sawmill group of Sweden, with its approximately 1000 employees. The sawmills are strategically placed in or near the huge forest areas in the province of Småland and the western Götaland province. About 85% of the production is being exported to Europe, USA, and Asia.

Source: https://www.skogsaktuellt.se/

Reduced supply, increased demand and higher prices.
