Instead, it is worthwhile to locate recycled fiber mills close to customers, which in praStirctice means Central Europe.

“The use of recycled materials will increase further in the future. Then factories are needed both where wood can be harvested and where products can be recycled, ”says Bresky.

Stora Enso currently has production facilities in 13 countries. In Finland, the company has two pulp mills, five board mills, two packaging units, four sawmills and one paper mill for the time being.

Birch wood replaced

Stora Enso suspended operations in Russia after Russia invaded Ukraine in February. Imports of wood from Russia to Finland have also stopped, which is estimated to increase logging in Finland.

According to Bresky, the matter is not so straightforward. For example, Stora Enso is no longer as dependent on Russian wood as it was a few years ago. Russia's share of Finland's imported wood has been about ten percent in recent years, and mainly birch pulpwood has been imported from Russia.

“Now we have to choose what products we want to produce. In some pulp mills, birch pulpwood has been replaced by spruce and pine pulpwood ”says Bresky.

According to her, the need for birch wood from the Imatra mills can be met with birch from Finland and the Baltic countries. At Enocell's plant in Uimaharju, birch pulpwood has so far been replaced by softwood.

According to Bresky, the need for additional felling is also curbed by the fact that the wood raw material can be used more efficiently at all times.

The majority of Stora Enso’s mills will continue to be located close to raw materials, ie in the Nordic region, says Annica Bresky, President and CEO of Stora Enso.
