This applies to both logs and lumber, but also to pulpwood, firewood and wood pellets. The causes are complex: the energy crisis, lack of raw materials and the Ukraine war are the most important.

The energy crisis and lack of raw materials are heating up the wood market . In February, German forest owners received 56% higher prices for spruce wood. After a short phase of weakness at the end of 2021, prices for other types of wood also rose sharply again at the beginning of this year.

German forest owners reported 56% higher prices for spruce wood in February

For example, pine wood has become 22 percent more expensive in a year-on-year comparison, around 30 percent more was paid for pulpwood , and buyers are also having to dig deeper into their pockets for energy wood and firewood.

Prices for hardwood such as oak and beech have recently risen significantly - in the case of oak by double digits. The trigger for the renewed price rally is not only the acute shortage of building materials and raw materials, but also the ongoing energy crisis. Not only does this mean that consumers are increasingly looking for alternatives to gas, heating oil or other fuels.

Added to this are the new sanctions that have now been passed against Russia, which also affect Russian wood exports and are also significantly thinning out the global supply of wood. According to dealers, fireplace owners have also recently tried to buy larger quantities of firewood.

Lumber prices rise to new highs

Prices for hardwoods such as oak and beech have also risen significantly recently – in the case of oak, by double digits.

In addition to the macroeconomic causes (lack of raw materials, energy crisis), the weather conditions at the beginning of the year also led to lower logging activity, according to German forest owner associations. At the same time, there is good to very good demand for almost all product ranges. The prices are at a very high level. And they are currently increasing both in Germany and Europe as well as on the world market.

The price for lumber on the futures market in the USA has risen again by around 20 percent since the turn of the year. In Germany, too, prices for almost all types of wood rose sharply in the first few months of the year . Bavarian forest owner associations report prices of 122 euros/m3 for fresh spruce logs with fixed lengths 2b+ for the 2nd quarter. Fresh bark beetle logs 2b+ are priced at around 102 euros/m3.

In the case of long timber, the prices for spruce logs 2b+ are currently as much as 125 euros net per cubic meter. Rising prices are also reported for pine wood. Here the prices have already reached the record level of the 3rd quarter of 2021 again. Pine wood of strength class 2b and BC quality was traded at 80 euros/m3 and more, and the trend is rising.

And market observers do not believe that this is the end of the current price increase. The very short contract terms mean that a further increase can be expected by May at the latest, is the assessment. Nevertheless, the wood prices are already at a level that has never been seen before.

Wood prices in Germany are at a level never seen before and continue to rise at rocket speed.
