UPM's net sales increased by 12 percent to EUR 2,507 million in the first quarter. The company made a profit of 139 million, which is almost one hundred million less than last year.<\/p>\n

According to CEO Jussi Pesonen , the result is a great achievement, considering the strike at most factories in Finland and the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Prices rose in all businesses, and market prices continued to rise in the pulp business.<\/p>\n

\"However, compared to the current market situation, the business area's result remained modest, as two-thirds of pulp production stalled due to the strike.\"<\/p>\n

The plywood business made a record profit, and the lumber business and the pulp mill in Uruguay performed excellently. Printing papers returned to the positive, although energy costs in particular rose sharply.<\/p>\n

\"One third of the production of graphic papers in Finland was due to a strike, but we were able to deliver orders from warehouses and factories outside Finland.\"<\/p>\n

A new pulp mill in Uruguay will start up early next year, a biorefinery in Leuna, Germany at the end of next year, and the basic design of a possible new biorefinery in Rotterdam is progressing.<\/p>\n
