For the oak market in France the current moment is historic as it has never reached such a level of demand for lumber and logs. Demand is so high as processors do not know where to turn, trying despite everything to favor their loyal customers while trying to satisfy newcomers.<\/p>\n

The fever that marks France's oak market today does not date from the first months of madness of this year 2022. The entire previous financial year, that of the post-Covid period, was marked by an irreducible rise in demand for oak in international markets.\u00a0This is confirmed at the beginning of spring 2022 in all products.
\n<\/span><\/p>\n

How can this unprecedented progress be explained?\u00a0It's quite simple.\u00a0The market has never been so demanding and the supply never so low.\u00a0\"In 26 years of presence in the company, it has never been so easy to sell products\"<\/em>\u00a0, says David Chavot, director of Margaritelli France.\u00a0The hunger for oak is so high that stocks of dry wood are at their lowest and sawmills, in certain assortments, are now forced to selling boards that have barely been dried.<\/span><\/p>\n

This context of historical demand for lumber is causing very strong tension in the purchase of oak logs.\u00a0\u201cThe same causes feed the same effects<\/em>, says the sawmill owner G\u00e9rald Brochet. ''But the difference with the recent past is that now we have gone to the power of 4 with exporters who have regained control of non-labelled sales.\u00a0The reality<\/em>\u00a0is that in the forest, buyers run after the raw material''.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

This situation of roundwood deficit is reflected in unprecedented price increases at the first sales in the spring of 2022. R\u00e9gis Anglaret, head of hardwood marketing at France's National Forest Office (ONF) in Bourgogne Franche-Comt\u00e9, notes an unusual surge in the prices of oak logs: this has reached +15% since the end of 2021. And over one year, the progress is striking (see table below).\u00a0\u201cSince March 2021, the increase has amounted to at least 50%, which brings the current prices for oak well above those obtained during the upturn in 2018.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0Today everything is sold, and everything from oak - coming at less than 150 \u20ac\/m3 roadside has become an unobtainable commodity.<\/span><\/p>\n

The question now is how the oak markets can evolve.\u00a0Barring an unforeseeable economic cataclysm and barring a lasting prolongation of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, it is likely that the lack of wood will increase in Europe.\u00a0The US and Chinese economies are running at full speed and factories have never devoured so much material.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the same time, the supply is decreasing in Europe and the Russian-Ukrainian conflict only exacerbates the deficiencies.\u00a0Russia and Belarus in softwood (approximately 10% of lumber consumption in Europe) are now gone.\u00a0Ukraine, which weighed considerably in wood entries in Europe, practically no longer exports oak, processing probably running at 30% of the country's capacity.<\/span><\/p>\n

Supply from other producers in neighboring regions is also down, but for other reasons.\u00a0Romania, which has probably overexploited its resource, is very discreet.\u00a0In Croatia and Poland, practices are moving towards more sustainable forest management.\u00a0Further east, Russian exports of roundwood processed in China, among others by Ikea, are now marked with the \u201cconflict timber\u201d stamp by PEFC and FSC.\u00a0The sale of the resulting processed products will be complicated in Europe.\u00a0Ultimately, the result of this complex interweaving of factors is simple: the shortage of oak is not about to diminish and professionals know very well what that means.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
