The association cited the EU sanctions against Russian banks and the difficult situation in the logistics sector as reasons for this, as numerous Ukrainian truck drivers devote themselves to military tasks.

In addition, the loss of raw material supplies and labor could have an indirect impact on imports of wood products, furniture and furniture parts from Ukraine's neighboring countries such as Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. Due to the lack of raw wood deliveries from Russia, Belarus and the Ukraine, producers in the neighboring countries would have further supply problems. These negative effects are likely to limit the availability of materials and not only drive up prices in these countries. Because it can be assumed that the producers in these countries will also endeavor to supply raw materials and materials in Germany.

In 2021, Germany imported wood products, furniture and furniture parts worth €625 million from Russia, €309 million from Belarus and €285 million from Ukraine. Russia's share in total German timber and furniture imports was 2.6%, Belarus' share 1.3%, Ukraine's share 1.2%. The imported goods were mainly softwood lumber, hardwood veneers, veneered wood, plywood, box pallets, upholstered furniture, bedroom furniture and other wooden furniture.

At the same time, the German wood industry exported wood products and furniture worth €176 million in 2021, mainly to Russia; exports to Belarus and Ukraine hardly played a role. The export goods were primarily finished furniture (kitchen furniture), furniture parts and MDF boards.

Germany's wood-based materials industry is feeling the effects in many ways

As an energy-intensive industry, the German wood-based materials industry massively affected by the increase in the cost of energy sources and, for example, urea for glue systems. The industry does not purchase any relevant quantities of wood from Russia or Belarus. However, the managing director of the Association of the German Wood-Based Materials Industry (VHI), Anemon Strohmeyer, expects the availability to deteriorate overall.

“A significant effect is that countries from which Germany buys wood to a greater extent, such as Poland, get less wood or no wood at all from Russia and the Ukraine. This leads to shifts in quantity, which then also affects the German wood industry, since less wood and primary products are exported to Germany from these countries. The effects of the war on the wood supply are more likely to reach Germany via the neighboring countries than a kind of domino effect. Since, according to the certifiers PEFC and FSC, all wood from Russia and Belarus is now considered so-called conflict wood, the already extremely tight market for certified products is becoming even more scarce. This intensifies an already existing competitive situation for certified woods.”

Switching from Russian coal to European energy wood?

The President of the Association of German Chambers of Commerce and Industry (DIHK), Peter Adrian, expects the Ukraine war to have serious effects on German-Russian trade relations and energy supply, with Germany accounting for 55% for gas, 35% for oil and 50% of coal is enormously dependent on Russia. In Austria, there are similar concerns. The Austrian Forest Association, the Biomass Association and proPellets Austria recently appealed to the federal government with a 10-point program to make full use of the potential of wood energy as quickly as possible. The usage residues due to increased forest care measures are currently over 250 million m³. That is enough wood for a massive timber construction program including sufficient energy to meet the gas requirements for space heating,

Will Russia's machines soon come from China?

The DIHK President also expects the conflict to have an impact on trade relations between Germany and China. "Russia will try to use its relationship with China to compensate for what will be lost from America and Europe from now on - such as technological supplies from the industrial and mechanical engineering sectors." Where machines are normally exhibited, Deutsche Messe has set up its Hall 27 in Hanover as a refugee accommodation for Ukrainians.

German furniture industry sees important export market at risk

The Association of the German Furniture Industry is expecting a drastic decline in furniture exports to Russia. In 2021, sales with these amounted to €87.5 million. Before the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict in 2014, German furniture exports to Russia still amounted to more than €200 million. After all, furniture from Russia plays just as little a role on the German market as semi-finished products.

Effects of the Ukraine war on the German timber industry are potentially extensive.
