Sanctions of the European Union (EU) and other countries against Russia and Belarus will also affect the Latvian timber industry. Latvia imported mainly wood raw materials from both neighboring countries - boards, firewood, particleboard and wood chips, as well as paper and cardboard. This is evidenced by the data of the Latvian Ministry of Agriculture. In turn, Latvia exported paper, cardboard and other products, as well as furniture, to Russia and Belarus.<\/p>\n

How will the suspension of trade with Russia and Belarus affect the Latvian timber industry?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"We no longer want to buy wood products from Russia and Belarus, because we believe that we simply should not participate even indirectly in the financing of this war,\" said Kristaps Klaus, executive director of the Federation of the Wood Industry, about Russia's invasion of Ukraine. He says that the volume of imports from Russia and Belarus to Latvia has been large so far - 1.1 million cubic meters of softwood lumber.<\/p>\n

\"If we look at the Baltic countries as a whole, the purchase of raw materials from Belarus and Russia was very important. In total, we, all three Baltic countries, bought three million cubic meters worth of softwood lumber from these countries, including a fairly large amount of MDF. We also purchased softwood plywood, which is needed for construction, and other wood raw material products,'' Klaus said.<\/p>\n

''Compensating for the volume and the type of specific products we basically bought in Russia, in Belarus, I really do not see another country where we can do that.''<\/p>\n

''Because the forest industries in Russia and Belarus were not in the same state of development as the forest industries in the Baltic States, we took the opportunity to buy a low-value product to which we added value in our countries. If we look at other European countries at a reasonable distance, they are all at our level,\" Klaus said.<\/p>\n

M\u0101rti\u0146\u0161 \u0100boli\u0146\u0161\u00a0of Citadele Bank estimated that the war in Ukraine and the sanctions of the European Union (EU) and other countries on Russia and Belarus will affect the Latvian timber industry less than other sectors, because wood is a local resource. Last year, the value of Latvia's exports of wood products reached almost four billion euros, while imports from Russia and Belarus amounted to 300 million euros.<\/p>\n

\"Let's say, from such trade links, I would say that the Russian market is more important for pharmaceuticals, metal, mechanical engineering and electrical equipment manufacturers. The companies that buy wood in the vicinity of Belarus,\u00a0 need to think more about using local resources, and of course there will be more competition for local resources, which will make it more expensive,''\u00a0\u0100boli\u0146\u0161 says.<\/p>\n

However, the Latvian timber industry is more based on local resources, so it is not that the wood processing industry depends on Russian, Belarusian trees.<\/p>\n

''We are still feeling the effects of war the most through inflation, and fuel prices are primary. In European markets, the price of natural gas is almost 10 times higher than in the last five years. Of course, there are places in Riga as well, including up to half of which could be heated with local resources, mainly with wood chips, \"said \u0100boli\u0146\u0161.<\/p>\n

Klaus, executive director of the Latvian Federation of the Wood Industry, said that prices in the wood processing sector would rise and that the agreements already concluded would also have to be reviewed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
