The volume of felling in the state forest should be increased rapidly and a clear framework for action should be established to continue felling in private forests in the spring period, as the Ukrainian war has caused a shortage of timber and warehouses are empty, warns the Estonian Forest and Timber Industry Association (EMPL).<\/p>\n

\"The Estonian economy is under great pressure, and the sanctions that have been joined and that are necessary will inadvertently affect the well-being of the Estonian people,\" said Henrik V\u00e4lja, CEO of EMPL. \u201cThe contribution of the forest and timber sector to the Estonian economy is comparable to the country's total investment in education, and the demand for our products is high on world markets, so the sector can alleviate a possible economic downturn. But it also requires quick and sensible decisions from politicians. \u201d<\/p>\n

According to V\u00e4lja, companies in the timber sector imported raw materials from Russia and Belarus that were scarce in Estonia due to domestic forest management restrictions. \"It is clear that the current environmental policy has brought us to a standstill and needs a rapid reassessment,\" said V\u00e4lja.<\/p>\n

In a letter to Prime Minister Kaja Kallas, Minister of the Environment Erki Savisaar, Minister of Enterprise and Information Technology Andres Sutt, Minister of Economic Affairs and Infrastructure Taavi Aasa and Minister of Finance Keit Pentus-Rosimannus, the Union points out that there is a serious risk that the shortage of raw materials will soon allow existing contracts and accept new orders.<\/p>\n

EMPL proposed specific solutions:<\/strong><\/p>\n

First of all, the volume of felling in Estonian state forests must be increased in order to obtain the necessary raw materials. Increasing the volume of felling will help prevent a material crisis in the timber industry, the construction sector and the energy sector - for example, the construction sector is severely affected by the deteriorating availability of building metals, which are being replaced by glulam.<\/p>\n

Estonian state forests are consistently well managed, which means that more logs are harvested there than from private forests. The non-industrial wood accompanying the felling can be used for energy production, thus reducing the energy crisis and the use of Russian gas (the latter is also a security threat to the Estonian state). This does not jeopardize the principles of sustainable forest management, as logging volumes have been below sustainable levels over the last decade.<\/p>\n

The cessation of timber imports from Russia and Belarus will have a major economic impact on the Estonian timber industry. In 2021, Estonia imported 1.1 million cubic meters of sawn timber from these countries in the value of 310 million euros, which Estonian companies largely valued and exported as more expensive products (such as wooden houses, construction details, etc.).<\/p>\n

As wood originating in Russia and Belarus disappears from the entire European market, there is already a large material shortage that cannot be replaced in trade relations. At the same time, there are unused production capacities in Estonian sawmills that could be used successfully.<\/p>\n

Approximately 3,900 companies operate in the forest and timber sector in Estonia. The estimated total value added of the sector is 2.2 billion euros, which is about 13.8% of the total value added in Estonia.<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
