All the wood needed by the industry can be found in domestic forests, and it is normally available on the market by purchasing it, says Marko M\u00e4ki-Hakola,\u00a0Forest Director at Finnish\u00a0Central Union of Agricultural Producers and\u00a0Forest\u00a0Owners (MTK).<\/p>\n

Nine million cubic meters of wood were imported from Russia last year. Slightly less than half of this amount was birch wood and a couple of million cubic meters of energy chips.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe biggest challenge in the availability of birch fiber wood is, but the industry is able to partially change the use of wood to pine-dominated. Although birch fiber wood often comes alongside other timber species, more is available from our forests, says Kalle Karttunen, MTK's research manager .<\/p>\n
Wood can be found at the right price<\/strong><\/p>\n In a gloomy situation, M\u00e4ki-Hakola sees even the bright side, at least from the perspective of forest owners, even if he formulates it carefully.<\/p>\n \u201cRising prices in the end product market brought record results to the forest industry last year. Unfortunately, the development of wood prices did not follow the price development of industrial products. The economic situation of the forest industry is good, and it is able to procure its wood from Finland with fair pricing, \u201dsays M\u00e4ki-Hakola.<\/p>\n In other words, domestic wood is available as long as the price is right.
