Russia's invasion of Ukraine could lead to serious consequences for the world economy and could also spread to the Swedish forest sector.<\/p>\n

In the short term, the war in Ukraine will generate higher energy prices that increase the costs of felling, transportation and not least the electricity-intensive mechanical pulp industry.<\/p>\n

In addition, ''we will see higher prices for wood products in Europe and more expensive pulpwood, \u201dsays Johan Freij, head of the Forest & Agriculture business area at Danske Bank Sweden.<\/p>\n

Russia is the world's largest exporter of wood products. The country produces about 40 million cubic meters of wood products annually. In recent years, Ukraine has also increased its timber exports to around three million cubic meters.<\/p>\n

European imports of wood products from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine amount to 8 million cubic meters. It accounts for about 8% of total consumption in Europe. \"If these volumes disappear from Europe, it will be a strong price driver and we can expect more expensive timber for our constructions,\" says Johan Freij.<\/p>\n

The megatrends in the forest sector, growing timber construction, the collapse of recycled fiber and the growth in packaging volumes indicate that 200 million cubic meters of sawn timber and 25 million tonnes more pulp will be needed in the next ten years.\u00a0At the same time, the supply of timber is declining in Canada and Germany due to pests.<\/p>\n

Wood product prices have been turning upwards for some time now, with strong demand in almost all markets. The sawmill industry has indicated price increases of up to 20% in the spring from already high levels.
