The European Union has banned most imports from Belarus over its involvement in Russia's invasion of Ukraine. On Wednesday, the EU agreed to ban 70 percent of exports from Belarus, with sanctions placed on wood, lumber, steel and iron.<\/p>\n

The ban also affects cement, rubber, fuels and closes loopholes for some of the existing sanctions on the nation.<\/p>\n

Along with the import bans, almost two dozen members of the Belarusian military were hit with economic sanctions.<\/p>\n

The move comes as Belarus has let Russian forces use its country as an entry point to attack Ukraine.\u00a0American officials have also said\u00a0Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko is preparing to send troops into Ukraine.<\/p>\n

The EU is also stopping many exports to Belarus that could be used to make weapons in areas such as advanced technologies, computers, electronics, telecoms, sensors and lasers, according to Reuters.<\/p>\n

Although the country\u2019s banks weren\u2019t affected in this round of sanctions, a European official said Belarusian banks being banned\u00a0from the international\u00a0SWIFT system is an additional step that \u201cwill come.\u201d<\/p>\n

The move comes the same day the White House said Belarus and Russia\u2019s defense sector would be hit with new sanctions.<\/p>\n

The EU accounts for just under 20% of Belarusian-foreign merchandise trade. Last year the EU imported for about 3.9 billion euro from Belarus and exported about 6.2 billion.<\/p>\n

This makes the EU Belarus\u2019 second largest trading partner. By far the most important trading partner is neighboring Russia, which accounts for around half of it.
