Last year, with the retreat of the bark beetle calamity, the Czech state enterprise Lesy \u010cesk\u00e9 republiky (L\u010cR) reduced logging by 20 percent to 11.41 million cubic meters.\u00a0In 2020, logging in Czech state forests reached a record 14.4 million cubic meters during the peak calamity.<\/p>\n

This year, L\u010cR plans to further reduce production, by a tenth to 10.2 million cubic meters.\u00a0L\u010cR\u00a0spokeswoman Eva Jouklov\u00e1 told \u010cTK yesterday.\u00a0The company manages almost half of the country's forests.<\/p>\n

Bark beetle wood logging fell 42 percent last year to 5.54 million cubic meters.\u00a0In addition to intensive logging of infested wood and other defensive measures, the weather also contributed to the decline of the calamity, which is the largest in the history of the Czech Republic.\u00a0\"It was a colder spring, the first swarming of the bark beetle was delayed, and the bark beetle managed to create a maximum of two generations,\" state foresters said earlier.<\/p>\n

The volume of so-called incidental logging, which mainly includes bark beetle logging and logging destroyed by wind and other elements, fell by 31 percent last year to 9.21 million cubic meters.\u00a0Random logging accounted for 81 percent of total mining, up from 93 percent the year before.<\/p>\n

Timber harvesting in Czech state forests began to grow significantly with the advent of the bark beetle calamity in 2018. In the years without the bark beetle calamity, logging at Lesy \u010cR was around eight million cubic meters.<\/p>\n

In addition to suppressing the calamity, forest regeneration was a priority for Lesy \u010cR last year.\u00a0Last year, the company afforested about 22,000 hectares of forest and planted a record 90 million trees.\u00a0\"This year, the goal is again to plant about 90 million seedlings and afforest about 21,000 hectares, of which about 5,000 are natural restoration,\" the spokeswoman said.\u00a0According to the Czech Republic, the currently achieved reforestation is at the limit of the capacities of Czech forestry and nurseries.<\/p>\n

According to Lesy \u010cR, new forests planted after the calamity should be more resistant and species-diverse with a higher proportion of deciduous trees.\u00a0About 67 percent of new plantings come from deciduous trees, the rest from coniferous trees.<\/p>\n

At the end of last year, the company reduced the area of \u200b\u200bclearings by 15 percent to 32,545 hectares from 38,508 hectares the year before.\u00a0In the days before the bark beetle calamity, the area of \u200b\u200bclearings was at the level of 12,000 hectares.<\/p>\n
