French MEP Emmanuel Morel sent a request to the European Commission, in which he expressed concern about the export of timber from Europe to other countries. He also asked if the EC plans to suspend the export of raw materials, as Russia is already doing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn light of the current situation, which is detrimental to the EU\u2019s climate change goals, will the European Commission follow Russia\u2019s example and suspend log exports in order to keep Europe access to this resource?\u201d<\/p>\n

Morel asked.<\/p>\n

According to him, despite the scale of wood production in the European Union, especially in France and Romania, the European woodworking industry is experiencing a lack of supply.<\/p>\n

But at the same time, European timber is actively exported to the United States and China, the MEP stressed.<\/p>\n

Morel recalled that in 2017 China banned deforestation for 99 years.<\/p>\n

Beijing's strategy is to build up timber stocks by selling it at prices higher than European countries can offer.<\/p>\n

As a result, this negatively affects European sawmills and the supply of wood to the European market, the parliamentarian believes.<\/p>\n

Morel also asked if the EC is going to implement a policy to support the European sawmill industry against this background.<\/p>\n

On January 21, the European Commission initiated a dispute in the WTO over restrictions imposed by Russia on the export of timber.<\/p>\n

According to the European side, Moscow violated the principles of the World Trade Organization.<\/p>\n
