Some recent auctions organized in Germany's forests reveal record prices both for softwood logs as well as for hardwood.<\/p>\n

New records in softwood auctions in Bavaria<\/strong><\/p>\n

Due to the corona pandemic, the traditional softwood auction in Litzendorf on January 18, 2022 was held as a submission for the second time in a row.\u00a027 bidders from Germany and abroad bid on valuable wood from Northern Bavaria.\u00a0Not only the number of participants, but also the results again trumped the previous years.\u00a0A total of nine state forest enterprises of the Bavarian State Forests (BaySF) had presented their valuable timber in advance at the two central storage areas in Strullendorf and Weibersbrunn.\u00a0At around 1300 fm, the BaySF offer was significantly higher than last year.<\/p>\n

The average price for all tree species, at \u20ac287\/m3, exceeds the previous year's value by more than \u20ac20\/m3.\u00a0All lots offered received a surcharge.\u00a0The highest bid of 600 \u20ac\/m3 was achieved this year.\u00a0An Upper Franconian bidder outbid his competitors with a larch from the forestry company Forchheim and a larch from the forestry company Bad Br\u00fcckenau.<\/p>\n

Overall, larch was the sales hit of the submission with an average price of \u20ac414\/m3 and clearly exceeded the previous year's figure (\u20ac396\/m3).\u00a0Likewise, the offered pine could enjoy an increasing demand.\u00a0With an average of \u20ac190\/m3, the result here is also above the previous year's figure of \u20ac182\/m3.\u00a0The jump in prices for the tree species Douglas fir is particularly worth mentioning.\u00a0With an average sales price of \u20ac339\/m3, the previous year's results were exceeded by more than \u20ac60\/m3.\u00a0In the case of valuable spruce wood, the quantity offered rose to over 100 sm\u00b3 and achieved an average price of 261 \u20ac\/m\u00b3.<\/p>\n

Lower Saxony hardwood auction\u00a0brought record prices again<\/strong><\/p>\n

On January 19, 2022, the bid opening of the 31st Northeim variegated hardwood and oak timber submission took place.\u00a0A total of 1,243 m3 (2021: 1,258 m3) of deciduous wood in 521 lots (2021: 561 lots) were offered at the Suterode and Liebenburg wood storage yards of the Lower Saxony State Forests (NLF).\u00a0All lots were awarded the contract.\u00a0More than half of the supply was supplied from cooperative forests managed by the NLF.\u00a0A third of the offer came from the Lower Saxony state forests, further quantities were offered by municipal forests and private forest owners.<\/p>\n

7500 bids from 43 bidders exceeded all expectations and the interest in oak was particularly pleasing.\u00a0For the 362 oak lots (2021: 383 lots), 37 bidders submitted a total of 6499 bids (2021: 3350 bids) and thus 18 bids per oak lot (2021: 8.7 bids per oak lot).\u00a0The average oak price of \u20ac961\/m3 far exceeds the all-time high of \u20ac735\/m3 achieved in 2021 in the NLF\u2019s valuable wood storage areas.<\/p>\n

The average price of the ash also rose again to \u20ac279\/m3 (2021: \u20ac257\/m3), for the 115 lots (2021: 147 lots) with a total of 277 m3 (2021: 387 m3) there were 17 bidders (2021: 16 bidders). ) an average of 6.6 bids per lot (2021: 5.2 bids per lot).<\/p>\n

For the first time in almost 20 years, the Lower Saxony State Forests have submitted beech again.\u00a0\"With the offer of the small amount of valuable beech wood from the Lower Saxony forest office in Reinhausen, we dared to try it, and an average price of \u20ac177\/sm\u00b3 was achieved,\" notes Dr.\u00a0Christof Oldenburg, Head of Wood Sales South, is satisfied.\u00a0A total of 17 FM beech were offered in 6 individual lots.\u00a0The highest bid was \u20ac223\/m3 for a beech with 3.65 m3.<\/p>\n

The range was completed by a small selection of other hardwoods, including sycamore (35 m3 at \u20ac363\/m3), cherry (17 m3 at \u20ac295\/m3) and individual lots of red oak (2 m3 at \u20ac439\/m3), Norway maple (2 m3 at 161 \u20ac\/m3), and elm (3 m3 at 1,104 \u20ac\/m3).<\/p>\n

At this year's hardwood submission by the Rhineland-Palatinate state forest on February 2, 2022, pleasing bids were rewarded with a surcharge.\u00a0Four forest offices had offered around 861 fm (previous year: 852 fm) oak, 27 fm ash (previous year: 48 fm) and 21 fm sweet chestnut (previous year: 0 fm).\u00a036 bids (previous year: 30) were received from the areas of veneer, cask and sawn wood.\u00a06 sm (previous year: 3 sm) remained without a bid.\u00a0Around 17 sc (previous year: 0 sc) were not added.<\/p>\n

At \u20ac918\/sm\u00b3, the oaks achieved an average price that was 19% higher than in the previous year. When viewed separately, the sessile oak recorded an increase of 25% at \u20ac872\/m3 and the English oak an increase of 18% at \u20ac994\/m3. All of the ash offered was sold for an average price of \u20ac258\/m3 (previous year: \u20ac155\/m3). From this year's chestnut supply, 18 sm\u00b3 were knocked down for an average price of \u20ac357\/sm\u00b3. The highest bid was \u20ac3,702\/m3 for a sessile oak from the Johanniskreuz forestry office with net sales proceeds of \u20ac11,624.
