Monthly volumes fluctuate somewhat, and in November softwood log exports increased a little to 105,888 m3.

For export, softwood logs are differentiated as larger or smaller than 15cm diameter. The distinction between log sizes was previously more noteworthy, but analysis becomes challenging as monthly export volumes are increasingly erratic, as seen in the chart.

As displayed in the left chart, the larger logs (diameter > 15cm) previously dominated Australia’s export trade. The trend now favours exports of the smaller diameter logs. For the year ended November 2021, exports of the smaller logs totalled 0.799 million m3, 62.3% of the trade, while shipments of larger logs totalled 0.484 million m3 (37.7%).

Differentiation of softwood log exports based on their diameter also allows for price analysis. Export prices for both the smaller and larger sized logs have remained relatively stable in recent months, oscillating month- on- month but moving through narrow range. In November 2021, the smaller logs average recorded price was AUDFob119.02/m3, while the export price of larger logs averaged AUDFob107.48/m3.

India: from nowhere to everything for Australian softwood logs

Australia's log exports have dwindled over the last year as the full impact of Chinese import bans have continued to bite deep. Though it has not replaced the volumes lost from the Chinese market, only one country - India - has taken significant and consistent supplies of Australia's softwood logs.

Year-ended November 2021, shipments to India totalled 564,000 m3, up from less than 25,000 m3 the year before. The Indian share of total exports lifted to 44% over the year, up from less than 1% the year before.

As the right chart shows, despite the efforts of exporters, the Indian market has been unable to fill the China void.

As the chart also shows, there has been price deterioration over the last year on average, some of which can be slated home to the Indian market. In truth, it is linked to the dramatic fall in export volumes arising from the previous 'one customer' approach to softwood log exports. Average export prices are set out below, along with some other data of interest.

November 2021 was the thirteenth consecutive month to record declines in Australia’s annual softwood log exports, with the annual volume dropping significantly.
