In the last few years, imports of raw materials for the Estonian wood industry have increased significantly, thus a\u00a0dependence on Russian raw materials is emerging.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Estonian imports of wood and wood products increased by 65 percent last year.\u00a0Henrik V\u00e4lja, CEO of the Finnish Forest and Wood Industry Association, says that growth started already in 2020.\u00a0There are several reasons.<\/p>\n

\"Firstly, we have developed a very strong competitive sawmill industry in Estonia, which, in addition to local raw materials, can also bring logs from abroad. Secondly, in addition to the sawmill industry, we have a very strong value-added industry, \" said\u00a0V\u00e4lja.<\/p>\n

In addition, over the past two years, there has been an oversupply of wood raw material in several countries near Estonia.<\/p>\n

\"For example, we import sawlogs from Sweden. There was a lot of damage in Sweden, which led to an oversupply of sawlogs. How long this oversupply will last is very difficult to assess. \"Another country from which sawlogs are imported is Norway.''<\/p>\n

According to Statistics Estonia, one third of all imports of timber and timber products come from Russia. Half of the volume imported from Russia is lumber.<\/p>\n

It is clear that imports alone cannot be relied on.\u00a0\"When we talk about [imports] to Russia, of course we have political tensions that make us worried about bringing material from there. There is price pressure from other EU countries to compete with, which makes our situation in export markets worse,\" he said.<\/p>\n

Meelis Seedre, the head of the forest department of the Ministry of the Environment, expresses the same concern.<\/p>\n

\"If we became dependent on Russian wood, they could very easily play with us, as they do now with gas,\" Seedre said.<\/p>\n

How much Estonian forests can be cut down in the future will also be discussed in the framework of the European Union's green revolution.\u00a0The Estonian Ministry of the Environment also prepares a forestry development plan.\u00a0Seedre\u00a0says that felling volumes will ultimately be decided by the development plan.<\/p>\n

\"The board of the Forestry Development Plan, which consists of top scientists in their field, has recommended moving towards even forest use over a long period of time. Even use is below the average felling volume of the previous decade,\" he said.<\/p>\n

An impact assessment is still pending for the forestry development plan.\u00a0According to Seedre, the plan should be handed to the Parliament for approval.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
