GWMI has taken a closer look at the plans that have been announced so far. We can see an upcoming production increase and an increased timber requirement of several million cubic meters. Investments seem to focus primarily on increasing volume, while less is invested in further processing.

In recent weeks, the year-end reports have landed in for the listed forest companies. Last year's wood product price boom has sharply increased profits in the Swedish sawmill business. The highest level to date has been reported by SCA with an EBITDA gain of 42% in its wood products division. Even if not all sawmill companies reach this profit margin, we can assume that all sawmills have made big money and that there is now room for extensive investments.

Increased timber demand in Central Sweden

Both Setra and Moelven plan to build new saw lines. In Skinnskatteberg and Karlskoga respectively. The goal is to access increased volumes of leaner logs. In addition to these investments, Moelven plans to invest heavily in Edane (Värmland). According to the company, Setra's investments will mean an increase in production of approximately 150-200,000 m 3 of sawn goods in Skinnskatteberg. In Dalarna, Bergvist-Siljan has received permission to increase its production by 250,000 m3 and in a first phase, an expansion of 100,000 m3 is now planned.

Derome and Vida are investing in Götaland

In southern Sweden, Derome has flagged for extensive expansion plans. It is currently unclear if exactly when and how these expansions will take place, but Derome has planned the expansion of its sawmill capacity at its plant in Derome , as well as the construction of a completely new sawmill in Kinnared. The sawmill in Maa is also seeking permission for a doubling of production. In total, if all plans are realized, it could be more than 500,000 m3 in increased production and an increased timber requirement of one million cubic meters.

Vida says that they have decided to invest half a billion in their sawmills, but it is not clear what these investments refer to or which sawmills are meant. It is already known that Vida is investing in new drying plants at six of its sawmills.

ATA Timber is another southern Swedish sawmill company that has investment plans and they apply to their sawmill in Rörvik. However, it is unclear whether these investments will lead to increased production or not. If we look at previously decided investments, Södra is in the process of completing its investemnt in Värö and in connection with this investment, there is also an expansion of capacity for planing, sorting and drying in the sawmill itself.

Setra, SCA and Holmen are investing in Norrland

Setra has also decided to expand its sawmill in Malå . In the first phase, production there will be increased by 190,000 m3, but in the future there may be more. This involves a new timber intake, a new saw line, an updated adjusting plant and a new drying plant.

In the north, SCA is currently carrying out a major expansion of its sawmill in Bollsta. With a new adjusting plant ready in the autumn of 2022, there is the possibility of an increased production of 375,000 m 3 according to information on SCA's site .

Holmen has flagged for investments in its sawmill in Iggesund with a focus on increased processing of construction timber. The investment refers to new timber sorting and a new planer line, but as bottlenecks are removed, Holmen expects to increase production by 20% as well.

The development of the sawmill in Iggesund aims to be able to exchange carpentry pine of lower qualities for structural timber in both spruce and pine. This increases the value added and improves the market mix by allowing a larger share of the production to be sold to Scandinavian construction trade.

Millions of cubic meters in increased timber demand

If you add up the production increase announced by the sawmills and convert it to raw material demand, the figures show a real increase in timber demand. Low calculated on more than three million m 3 fub. Considering that iskogen.se does not have the whole picture of the total investments, the need for timber is probably even greater.

Both Setra and Moelven are investing in small timber lines in Svealand and this can provide some available raw material that today would otherwise be pulpwood. With newsprint mills closing down, the available volume of small timber increases for purposes other than wood chips. But the fact remains that the need for timber will increase by several million cubic meters. Maybe as much as 4-5 million when we reach 2025.

"Everyone wants to invest!"

In addition to these investments known today, there are a number of larger or lesser known expansion plans at a large number of sawmills.

''It seems that all sawmills should invest at the same time and this applies not only in Sweden but throughout the world,'' says Jonas Gunnarson, CEO of the sawmill technology company C Gunnarsson's Verkstäder (CGV) in Vislanda.

In Sweden and Finland, there are many leading suppliers of machinery and technology for sawmill production. Ari Vislanda , USNR in Söderhamn, Valutec in Skellefteå, C Gunnarsson's Verkstäder in Vislanda, Remasawco in Linköping and Heinola in Finland to name a few. Jonas Gunnarsson says that the situation is completely extreme and that today they have delivery times of two years for new projects. It is no longer a matter of upgrading existing facilities and removing bottlenecks, but now many large projects are also planned. Despite the fact that CGV is increasing its production, it is not able to keep up with demand. Something that Jonas sees as problematic as they normally live very close to their customers and can offer solutions within reasonable delivery times.

Billions must be invested

The above compilation shows that there are already decided and known sawmill investments of more than four and a half billion kronor (EUR 450 million). To this can be added investments that are not yet known. All in all, they can lead to a Swedish annual sawmill production of around 22 million m3 and an increased timber requirement of 4-5 million m3.

Swedish sawmills have made record results in 2021 and there are plans for record investments and increased timber demand in the coming years.
