The year 2021 was\u00a0a year of unexpected extremes for the Czech sawmills.\u00a0Especially in the prices and sales of lumber, whose prices in the spring and early summer due to high interest in it deviated from standard movements and began to rise sharply, and subsequently with them the prices of logs.<\/p>\n

From mid-July, interest in lumber and with it its prices fell slightly until the end of the year, which traditionally reduced the activity of Czech sawmills with the approaching Christmas holidays.\u00a0The reduction in sawmill output in the last months of last year, together with considerably high logging, caused by high sawlog prices, caused a decline in interest in the raw material, and thus a certain slowdown in its price growth.<\/p>\n

The situation outlined above in the Czech sawmill sector at the turn of last year and this year formed the main content of the program of the autumn professional meeting of the Association of Wood Processing Companies in the Czech Republic (SDP), which took place on November 6, 2021 in the presence of almost 40 representatives from 29 SDP member companies.<\/p>\n

Logs in the Czech Republic are slowly disappearing from the market<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"After previous years, when the supply of logs on the market outweighed the demand, sawmills are now entering a phase where logs are starting to be missing from the market.\u00a0What's worse is that demand for lumber is starting to fall sharply.\u00a0However, the worst of all this period, within the whole SDP, is almost zero cooperation with the state enterprise Lesy \u010cR (L\u010cR), which tries to give the impression that it wants to cooperate with us, that it wants to hear us, but that is probably so everything, \"stated in the introduction to his entry Ing.\u00a0P\u0159\u00edkask\u00fd, chairman of SDP.<\/p>\n

\"I know that due to the bark beetle calamity, the situation in the availability of logs is very different depending on the region.\u00a0I dare to say that the worst at the moment are the sawmills in northern Moravia, which started with the bark beetle calamity first and where today the amount of the raw material is smaller.\u00a0Of course, the situation is different in the Vyso\u010dina region, where especially small forest owners do not yet have complete control over the calamity, and also in northern Bohemia, where this year the calamity escalated mainly in \u010ceskolipsko, Rumbursko, D\u011b\u010d\u00ednsko and in Je\u0161t\u011bd.\u00a0But it won't take long and we will all be in the same situation, so we really have to find a way to get to the raw material.\u00a0So far, it seems so, judging by the specific experience of our company, that even if we offer the amount we want for the log, we usually do not get it.\u00a0Of course, we do not like this and we would like the log market to be open to all processors who employ and create some value in the Czech Republic, because it is a raw material originating from the Czech Republic, \"said Ing.\u00a0P\u0159\u00edkask\u00fd.<\/p>\n

In the section devoted to logs, those present also received information about the results of the L\u010cR's October tender for forestry contracts, in which its direct participants pointed out the exorbitant prices that its winners were willing to offer for these contracts.\u00a0According to experts, this confirmed the huge demand for wood raw materials from companies, stating that in the first quarter of this year, the price for spruce logs in classes III A \/ B \/ C could be in the range of 3000\u20133500 CZK \/ m3 (EUR 123-144)\u00a0and for bark beetle wood or quality III D around 2500 CZK\/m3 (EUR 103).<\/p>\n

Will there be a stabilization in lumber sales and prices this year?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The old-new chairman of the SDP, Ing.\u00a0Petr Pra\u017ean, Ph.D. said that the year 2021 was a year of unexpected extremes, especially in the prices and sales of lumber in the spring and early summer.\u00a0At this time, according to him, mainly due to high interest in lumber, its prices deviated from standard movements and skyrocketed. Subsequently, log prices also began to rise sharply.<\/p>\n

\"The culmination of interest in lumber occurred in mid-July, and since then interest has been gradually declining, as has the growth rate of its prices.\u00a0With this, of course, the activity of sawmills also begins to decline, which in many cases is likely to result in the extension of the Christmas holidays, \"said Ing.\u00a0The fact that the reduction in Czech sawmill output, together with the considerable high logging caused by the high prices of sawlogs, is likely to cause a decrease in interest in the raw material and thus a certain decrease in the growth rate of its price.<\/p>\n

\"After the experience of previous seasons, we cannot expect a large increase in demand for lumber at the turn of the year, which we hope we can only increase in February and March.\u00a0The price and availability of raw materials will probably adjust to the situation, although after the extreme fluctuations that occurred during 2021, it is possible to expect further fluctuations, \"added the chairman of the SDP, adding that the crucial question will be whether and at what value prices will fall lumber in the first quarter and whether the cut at log prices will be profitable at this time.\u00a0However, in 2022, according to its chairman, the SDP expects a certain stabilization in both sales and lumber prices, which would allow better, and especially longer-term, calculation of wood products, which most small and medium-sized sawmills focus on.<\/p>\n

\"However, experts agree that there will continue to be some turbulence in the development of prices and lumber sales, which would mean that until recently, quiet times probably no longer await us.\u00a0Therefore, we can only hope that lumber sales will traditionally improve with the arrival of spring and thus meet the longer-term expectations of relatively good global sales of softwood lumber, \"added Ing.\u00a0The Prague citizen with the addition that the year 2022 will also show whether the decline of the bark beetle calamity is really a trend, and will probably also indicate what the availability of spruce logs can be expected in the coming years.<\/p>\n

At the end of last year, the vast majority of sawmills, not only in Austria and Germany, but also in other Central European countries, showed very good stocks. December prices for spruce logs in class B 2bn plus (ranged, for example, in Austria from 102 to 108 EUR \/ m3 , in Bavaria from 94 to 100 EUR\/m3 and in Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg from 97 to 107 EUR \/ m3.\u00a0 At that time, demand for spruce logs in Central Europe was stable and prices for the first quarter of 2022 were negotiated.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
