The price of wood pellets has seen a sharp rise in Central European countries in January 2022.<\/p>\n

Germania<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

The increase in the price of wood raw materials such as chips has lead to a further increase in the price of pellets in Germany in January 2022.\u00a0The German Pellet Institute (DEPI) reports that pellets cost 366.58 euros\/t on average for deliveries of 6 tons (t).\u00a0This corresponds to an increase of 20.9 percent compared to the previous month and of 54.0 percent compared to January 2021. Nevertheless, there is still a significant price advantage compared to the fossil fuels gas (around 26 percent) and oil (around 17 percent).\u00a0A kilo of pellets costs 36.66 cents, a kilowatt hour (kWh) of heat 7.33 cents.<\/p>\n

\"The scarce availability of wood chips and their significant price increase are currently making pellets extraordinarily expensive,\" reports Martin Bentele, Managing Director of the German Pellet Institute.\u00a0In addition to the raw material prices, the prices for electricity and fuel for producers and retailers have also risen sharply.\u00a0However, since there are already signs of a significant increase in demand for construction timber on the timber market, Bentele expects the situation to ease at the beginning of spring.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Since the pellet trade in Germany is currently reporting restrained demand, it can be assumed that many consumers will behave in line with the market.\u00a0This means practicing seasonal purchasing behavior and filling the stores with pellets in spring and summer when they are particularly cheap.<\/p>\n

Austria<\/strong><\/p>\n

Compared to the previous year, the prices for a purchase quantity of 6 tons have risen by an average of 33.63 percent, the average price for this purchase quantity has increased by 12.51 percent compared to the previous month.<\/p>\n

The price range is between 289 euros\/ton and 325 euros\/ton. The cheapest 6 tons currently cost 1,734 euros. The pellet prices for a purchase quantity of 4 tons range from 292 euros\/ton to 330 euros\/ton, which corresponds to an average increase of 12.56 percent compared to the previous months.<\/p>\n

Switzerland<\/strong><\/p>\n

At an average of CHF 431.10 per ton, the Swiss pellet price in January 2022 rose by 8.9 percent compared to the previous month.\u00a0In January 2022 is\u00a020 percent higher than a year ago when it was CHF 359.30.\u00a0The current average price is based on information from 25 suppliers.<\/p>\n
