Overall, producers' log prices in November were 30% higher than a year earlier.

However, sales prices for the German lumber industry in November 2021 were much higher than last year's prices: prices for softwood lumber, as well as other processed wood products, were up 72.5% from a year earlier. Prices for veneer lumber, particleboard and fiberboard are 32% to 40% higher than in 2020. The price of wood packaging was almost 74% higher than the previous year, and the price of wood prefabricated buildings (prefabricated houses) was up almost 11%.

So far, spruce lumber prices have risen significantly compared to the same period last year.

Producer prices for spruce in November 2021 were 52.5% higher than the previous year in all ranges and qualities. However, compared to October 2021 prices, prices have dropped. The price of pine is also significantly higher than last year. Prices in November 2021 were 21.4% higher than a year earlier.

Among the hardwoods, oak has the strongest growth. Oak log prices in November were about 7.7% higher than in the same month and nearly 2% higher than in October. In November, producers received only 2.2% more beech logs than the previous year. In addition, the price of beech fell sharply by 3.5% compared to October.

According to a report by the Forest Owners Association in Lower Bavaria, Germany, there is currently good demand for spruce logs and profiles. The price of fresh spruce length 2b+ is around 107 EUR/m3 and the price of fresh spruce long wood 2b+ is around 110 EUR/m3. The price for pine fixed length and long wood 2b+ is around 75 EUR/m3.

It was also reported that prices for pulpwood, fuelwood and energy wood were also very good. Industrial lumber prices were 19.4% higher than last year.

In the third quarter, Germany exported a total of 2.125 million cubic meters of softwood logs: 39% less than the same period last year. But in the fourth quarter, producer-level lumber prices came under considerable pressure in some cases. The main factors were falling prices and a sharp drop in export sales.

Log prices rose to record levels in a short period of time. After the boom in export commodities has subsided and prices have fallen, there is no reason for the German domestic sawn timber industry to maintain high prices.

Prices for softwood lumber bottomed out in December 2021, according to feedback from local German producers, processors and traders. In the new year, the market seems to have stabilized further, and regional prices may rise slightly again.

In November 2021, German forest owners increased their income from the sale of spruce logs by around 50%.
