In 2021, the value of China's lumber imports reached\u00a07.179 billion US dollars, while the value of log imports reached\u00a011.594 billion US dollars, an increase of 2.8% and\u00a03.8% respectively compared with 2020..<\/p>\n

In volume, China's softwood lumber imports in 2021 dropped by 26.2% year-on-year. The average price of imported softwood lumber increased by 27% to $222 per cubic meter.<\/p>\n

Brazil is the only country able to increase its supply of softwood to China in 2021, with Brazilian exports to China increasing by 33.2%.\u00a0Softwood lumber exports to China from Canada, Germany and Finland all fell sharply by 57%, 50% and 32% respectively.<\/p>\n

In 2021, a total of 63.58 million cubic meters of domestic logs where imported by China, an increase of 6.9% over the same period last year.<\/p>\n

Looking at the monthly data, we can notice that the increase in log imports in 2021 is mainly concentrated in the first half of the year.<\/p>\n

Especially in May 2021, Chinese log imports increased by as much as 60.5% year-on-year.\u00a0In the second half of the year, the volume of log imports showed a decline ranging from 3% to 17%.<\/p>\n

In 2021, both the prices for China's log and lumber imports have seen a sharp rise in prices. The only difference is that log prices fell significantly at the end of last year, but lumber prices benefited from the continued strength of the international timber market.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
