European softwood lumber exports to the USA continued to rise in 2021, although the pace of growth in volume was significantly lower as compared to the previous year. However, due to record prices mostly in the first half of the year, the value of European lumber exports from January to November 2021 was 60% higher yoy and reached a total value of EUR 1,39 billion, thus surpassing for the first time the EUR 1 billion mark.<\/span><\/p>\n

From January to November 2021, European lumber shipments to the US increased by\u00a012% (up to 3.7 million cubic meters).\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

In January-November 2021, US' main source for European softwood was\u00a0Germania<\/strong>\u00a0with 2 million m3 and a share of 54 percent of the overall American imports from Europe. In value, German exports grew by 77% up to EUR 767 million.<\/p>\n

Sweden<\/strong>\u00a0came second with 657 thousand m3 and a 9% decrease yoy. However, in value Sweden's lumber exports to US increased by 38%, up to 289 million.<\/p>\n

Significant growth rates in exports to the US were reported from\u00a0Romania\u00a0<\/strong>(+25% in volume and 59% in value).<\/p>\n

Looking back at 2021, it seems that European sawmills tried to take advantage of the record prices in North America. The graph above shows that from January to July, European lumber exports to the US where at a high pace at the same time when lumber prices in US hit record after record. When prices fell rapidly (July-August, through October), European exports slowed but to sharply rise in November, when lumber prices in US started to pick up.<\/p>\n

The prospects for 2022 are encouraging: with duties on Canadian lumber, a high pace of US homebuilding and consequently the lumber scarcity (similar to 2021) may keep lumber prices at a high level. Thus, European lumber exports to the US will probably rise sharply once again.<\/p>\n
