Sumitomo Corporation has acquired timberland in the North Island of New Zealand through its local subsidiary company Summit Forest New Zealand (SFN), 100% subsidiary company of Sumitomo Corporation.<\/p>\n

It has completed acquisition of 15,000 hectares of timberland from Ernslaw One. Purchase amount is not disclosed but is estimated about 102 billion yen (US$887 million).<\/p>\n

SFN owns\u00a0already a total of 37,000 hectares of timberland in New Zealand, so with the new acquisition, the total is 52,000 hectares, which is seventh largest timberland owner in New Zealand. For the newly purchased timberland, Sumitomo will have a log harvest of 200,000 cubic meters and a total of 800,000 cubic meters for all timberlands owned in New Zealand.<\/p>\n

Sumitomo sells about 350-400,000 cbms of radiata pine logs for New Zealand domestic wood processors and it plans to export logs of 860-900,000 cbms a year, mostly to China. From all New Zealand log exporters to China, Sumitomo is ranked fifth.<\/p>\n

Sumitomo also has joint venture forest products company in Russia, which owns 2,660,000 hectares of timberlands.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
