{"id":81753,"date":"2022-01-26T07:22:40","date_gmt":"2022-01-26T07:22:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tin.happy-projects.ro\/czech-wood-prices-roller-coaster-ride\/"},"modified":"2025-09-19T08:56:49","modified_gmt":"2025-09-19T08:56:49","slug":"czech-wood-prices-roller-coaster-ride","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.timberindustrynews.com\/ro\/czech-wood-prices-roller-coaster-ride\/","title":{"rendered":"Czech wood prices on a roller-coaster ride"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"article-content\">\n<p>A simple economic reasoning suggests that the prices of wood correspond to its current availability or unavailability.\u00a0During the bark beetle disaster of 2016-2020 its price fell to a record low in the Czech Republic.<\/p>\n<p>The Czech Ministry of Agriculture\u00a0released over eight billion crowns (EUR 326 million)\u00a0to save forest companies, but many owners fell into losses.\u00a0Smaller entrepreneurs in particular often did not have the funds for the\u00a0legally required forestry work, especially the planting of bark beetle clearings.<\/p>\n<p>\"You invest in a young forest, it needs care, forestry interventions,\" Miroslav Svoboda, a professor of forest cultivation at the Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology of the Czech University of Agriculture, described to iROZHLAS.cz last November.<\/p>\n<p>\"If you spend on the final harvest of wood, then you lack the money to take care of it.\u00a0When the state forced bark beetle-infested trees to be felled at a time when the price of wood was minimal, the cost of harvesting was often not paid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The deepest low price of spruce logs, which in the bark beetle years accounted for the vast majority of harvested timber, happened in the summer of 2020. According to the Czech Statistical Office (CSO), logs, for example, were sold for about half the price of pre-disaster levels.<\/p>\n<p>With low wood prices, Czech forest owners looked for ways to store unsold logs.\u00a0It was even time for a process that had not been used for many decades -\u00a0soaking the wood in the ponds.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the historic sale was replaced by a historic rise in prices.\u00a0During 2021, the price of spruce logs doubled, in the autumn it surpassed even pre-bark beetle prices and it does not seem that it will stop.<\/p>\n<div id=\"g1\" data-highcharts-chart=\"0\">\n<div id=\"highcharts-pkyfqy3-0\" class=\"highcharts-container\" dir=\"ltr\">The rise in price is met with a wet year last year, which paralyzed the spruce bark beetle:\u00a0its spread stopped for a while, which led to a decline in calamity harvesting.\u00a0At higher prices, in part, a sudden shortage of wood started.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Wooden bubble<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>However, data from international timber markets show that the role of bark beetles cannot be overestimated.\u00a0The price of wood has been experiencing unprecedented fluctuations in European markets, the United States and China since the spring of 2021.\u00a0The reason is last year's recovery of the world economy after the first wave of the covid pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>In the spring of 2021, wood prices reached record highs.\u00a0In a stage sometimes called as a\u00a0<em>wooden bubble<\/em>, high demand for new buildings met with low wood supply caused by lockdowns.<\/p>\n<p>At the end of the year, US wood prices jumped for the second time.\u00a0This time due to floods in Canada and extreme heat in the United States.\u00a0Both led to a reduction in wood production, while at the same time the demand for lumber rose again.<\/p>\n<p>Due to higher prices, Czech spruces traveled all over the world last year.\u00a0The biggest crack was caused by exports to China, which also angered the then Czech Minister of the Environment.<\/p>\n<p>\"I was also very annoyed by the packed ships sailing to China and the United States.\u00a0But we can't be surprised by the owners, for whom it is a source of livelihood, that they tried to sell the wood, which was in a desperate price drop,\"\u00a0Richard Brabec (YES) told Czech Radio Plus\u00a0at the end of last year .<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the Uniles\u00a0company won the most orders for the extraction of bark wood from the Forests of the Czech Republic\u00a0from the trust fund of Prime Minister Andrej Babi\u0161 (ANO), in whose cabinet Brabec worked.<\/p>\n<p>CZSO data reveal that last year the Czechs actually exported a record amount of logs.\u00a0But neither China nor the United States were the main destinations.<\/p>\n<div id=\"g2\" data-highcharts-chart=\"1\">\n<div id=\"highcharts-pkyfqy3-280\" class=\"highcharts-container\" dir=\"ltr\">According to last year's\u00a0Report on the State of the Forest, the vast majority of companies from the European Union are partners of Czech timber traders.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\"85 percent of the value of total raw wood exports were exported to EU countries.\u00a0Most to Austria (38.3 percent), Germany (17.5 percent), Poland (10.1 percent), Slovakia (9.4 percent) and Romania (4.8 percent). \"<\/p>\n<p>In Austria, the enormous exports of cheap Czech wood provoked\u00a0protests by foresters\u00a0.<\/p>\n<p>Czechs have been the largest EU exporter of timber in recent years, ahead of Germany and Poland, which have also been affected by the bark beetle disease.\u00a0Since 2015, Czech exports have almost tripled.<\/p>\n<div id=\"g3\" data-highcharts-chart=\"2\">\n<div id=\"highcharts-pkyfqy3-1107\" class=\"highcharts-container\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Plundering of forests<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>According to CZSO data, the majority of Czech timber exports are unprocessed logs.\u00a0On the other hand, Czechs often import wood products, which have become the most expensive in recent months.<\/p>\n<p>\"We lack the capacity to process wood, so there is nothing left but to export raw wood,\" says Miroslav Svoboda, a professor of forestry.\u00a0\"The added value of wood is usually given abroad, so most of the profit is made there.\u00a0The Czechs do not have much to cut down their forests. \"<\/p>\n<p>\"Especially in the case of Lesy \u010cR, the question is whether the current assignment is ideal for citizens,\" adds Svoboda. \"Although the state-owned company earns several billion crowns, the rest of the profit from harvesting remains in the hands of companies that then sell raw wood abroad.
