2021 were 52.5 percent higher than in the previous year across all ranges and qualities.

However, the selling prices of the German timber industry in November were much higher than the previous year's prices: according to the German Federal Statistical Office, 72.5 percent more was asked for than a year earlier for softwood sawn timber, as well as other processed wood products for construction, wooden pallets, chipboard, wood pellets and Paper was also considerably more expensive than a year ago.

And the price development for forest owners was not as positive as it seems at first glance . In the course of the fourth quarter, wood prices at producer level came under considerable pressure in some cases. The triggers were clearly falling prices and sharply declining sales volumes in exports.

In the course of the third quarter, a total of 2.125 million m³ of softwood logs were exported from Germany: That was 39 percent less than in the same quarter of the previous year. Of course, the producers felt the effects of this slump in sales immediately.

The forest owners' association Franconian Switzerland reported: " Unfortunately, the rise in log prices to a historic record level was very short. After the boom in export goods abated and prices fell as a result, there was no longer any reason for the domestic sawmill industry to keep prices high ." For the fourth quarter, the market initially leveled off at a "normal level".

The prices mentioned for fresh spruce in the leading range 2b were then 85 to 90 €/bm, beetle wood was paid at 65 to 70 €/bm and D wood at 55 to 60 €/bm. On the other hand, there was little change in pine prices. Between 65 and 70 €/m3 were paid for pine wood of thickness class 2b in BC quality, for D-timber the prices were between 50 and 60 €/m3.

Since the demand for sawn timber had collapsed at times, there were also regional problems with timber removal. Even from the large damaged areas, considerable quantities were still pressing onto the market. Longer storage times are therefore expected in some regions over the winter months.

The prices for pine wood were also significantly higher than last year. Here the statisticians reported 21.4 percent higher prices for November than in the previous year. In addition, pine wood has also become more expensive compared to the previous month.

2022: New impulses for spruce wood

According to statements by producers, processors and traders, however, the price of softwood sawn timber bottomed out in December. And in the new year, the market seems to be stabilizing further and regional prices were able to increase slightly again.

For example, the forest owners' association Gangkofen from the Lower Bavarian district of Rottal reports on the development in the new year: "There is currently a good demand for spruce logs and sections. The prices for fresh spruce fixed lengths 2b+ are around 107 €/m3 and for fresh spruce long wood 2b+ around 110 €/m3."

<div id="attachment_27514" class="wp-caption
