This is a decrease from 451 registered forwarders in 2020 to 332 last year. According to the machine companies, it is the delivery capacity that has failed while the demand for forwarders is still high.

Last year, we reported a record year for registered forwarders on the Swedish market. This year, 26 percent fewer machines have been registered. It may sound like a big difference but it actually makes 2021 a fairly normal year in historical comparison.

Global all-time hig for forest machine sales

Skogsforum has talked to several Swedish representatives of forwarder manufacturers and they give a consistent picture of the situation. Henrik Johansson, who is Sweden's manager at John Deere Forestry, says that there has been a boom in virtually all markets where CTL-type forestry machines are sold in 2021. However, several of these markets were significantly calmer in 2020, which meant that John Deere and other manufacturers could send more machines to Sweden.

Russia is increasing and CTL is entering new countries

Both John Deere and Komatsu say that Russia has greatly increased demand for forest machines, but order intake has also increased from North America and countries in South America. According to Peter Hasselryd, marketing manager for Sweden at Komatsu Forest in Umeå, forest machines are now being sold to new countries in South America and Asia. Countries where the Nordic manufacturers have not previously had a market.

Carl-Henrik Hammar, CEO of Ponsse AB in Surahammar, says that production is in full swing in Finland but that deliveries are quotas between different markets. Sweden's share of Ponsseskotare for 2022 is in principle already fully established and orders are now being taken for delivery in 2023.

Bottlenecks in manufacturing

Just as in other vehicle and machine industries, there is a shortage of components and inputs also in forest machine manufacturing. The manufacturers have been able to keep production going for the most part, but some machines have gone directly from the belt to set-up on the farm. While waiting for any missing electrical or hydraulic component. For Komatsu, the move to the new factory in Umeå has also contributed to reduced production. During the actual move in August, production stood still since it was pulled with restrictions during the start-up last autumn, according to Peter Hasselryd.

The problems with component shortages and restrictions from subcontractors remain to some extent, even though the problem according to most suppliers has decreased compared to what it looked like in 2021. If the development continues to be positive in 2022, it will be more machine factories' production rate that sets the limits. According to Carl-Henrik Hammar at Ponsse AB, the maximum capacity in the Finnish Vieremä factory is basically up to par. If it is to be possible to reduce delivery times when the world market for forest machines has an all-time high, investments in increased production capacity are required. Komatsu's new factory in Umeå can certainly be ramped up considerably against the previous pace of production, but it takes time and there is a long chain of subcontractors who have to keep up.

Small changes in market shares

If you look at the registrations of different forwarder brands, there are quite small changes in market shares. John Deere increases a few percent while Komatsu and Ponsse decrease slightly. The two are now in principle equal in number of delivered forwarders. The smaller manufacturers, such as Eco Log and Rottne, do not reduce the number of machines as much and thus increase their market share. It is quite clear that the smaller manufacturers do not have as "sluggish" delivery capacity as the larger ones, but that they are more even over time.

Logset takes market in Sweden

A new-old player that has gained a foothold in the Swedish market again is Logset. From having registered zero forwarders in 2020, six forwarders have now been delivered last year. Maybe they can grow further in 2022? Provided that they can get more machines from their factory just outside Vaasa in Finnish Ostrobothnia. Sampo, on the other hand, has reduced its registrations in Sweden in 2021.

The three podium places for registered forwarders in Sweden in 2021 all goes to John Deere Forestry. The 1510G take the gold medal, followed by 1910G and 1010G. The John Deere 1010G has done better than the average in 2021 (27 forwarders in 2021 compared to 32 in 2020), as the John Deere 910G only had two registered in 2021 (compared to 8 in 2020).

Machines that have had a clear decline in 2021 are Eco Log 575F (2 machines in 2021 / 19 in 2020), Ponsse Bison (3/14) and Komatsu 895 (12/27).

Smaller machines

Forwarders, that on the other hand, have increased the registrations in 2021 compared to 2020, are the ex. Gremo machine Eco Log 1050F (10 in 2021 / 6 in 2020), Rottne F11D (17/13) and Eco Log 1250F (4/1). The reason for this could be discussed, but the fact is that the average payload for registered forwarders in 2021 has decreased slightly. A development that we have seen some years now. If this is due to a market demand for smaller machines or if it is the type of machines the manufacturers have been able to deliver, we leave unsaid for the moment.

Long delivery times means later trade ins

During the last few years, the trend has been earlier trade ins of used forest machines. A strong international market for good used machines has made it attractive for contractors to trade in machines with some life span left. But according to Peter Hasselryd at Komatsu Forest, this trend seems to be turning, not least due to the long delivery times for new forwarders. Most likely, Peter says, the running hours on secondhand machines will increase from now on.

The data on the number of registered forwarders are now compiled and we can see that the Swedish forwarders market in 2021 shrank significantly compared to the record year 2020.
