Without the corona problems you might speak of a great year. Challenges abounded, but overall, companies in the Dutch timber industry ended the year on a positive note. The great flight that timber construction has taken in 2021 certainly provides a good feeling and pride. The Dutch wood industry is approaching 2022 with a lot of energy.

Paul van den Heuvel, director of the Royal Association of Dutch Timber Companies VVNH and Centrum Hout, closed the year with a special feeling. '2021 was a year with corona consequences and a special timber market, but also the year of enormous attention for timber construction. The puzzle pieces fall into place. I look back on it fondly.'

Director Kees Hoogendijk is less positive at the CBM trade association for the interior construction and furniture industry : 'But the glass is certainly half full. The lockdown is again causing such annoying economic damage, but the industry is doing well under the circumstances," said Hoogendijk.

Results under pressure

Typical for this year of price increases is the business survey by the Netherlands Timber Trade Association NTTA (for timber companies) and Koninklijke Hibin (for construction supply). In this survey, a turnover increase of 20 percent is visible at the participating companies in the sector, but on the other hand an increasing profit margin of 'only' 4 percent. Although there is also an upward trend compared to the first half of 2021, about 2 percent, those who were not careful saw their profits go up in smoke due to higher purchase prices.

The figures from CBM show that the Dutch furniture manufacturers and interior builders are coming through the crisis well from an economic point of view. Since the corona outbreak, a clear trend break can be seen in the downward trend that had started since 2016. The percentage of companies with turnover growth has now risen sharply again, but has not yet returned to the old level of five years ago. Kees Hoogendijk expects the upward trend to continue next year.

Dutch timber market

Rising demand for wood, disruptions due to corona, shortages and the sky-high container rates drove up wood prices enormously in 2021. In the market surveys, which can be read in the printed trade magazine Houtwereld , there was little good news to report this year. 'Hectic not over yet', 'availability urgent', 'ending in uncertainty' was just about the gist of every story, but here and there the market also seems to be stabilizing a bit. Paul van den Heuvel saw the problems in the carpentry industry: 'Whereas the regular customers did receive their wood fairly distributed according to availability, companies without regular suppliers sometimes had trouble getting materials.'

CBM's lawyers assisted entrepreneurs in the furniture industry this year to arm themselves well against the rising raw material prices, so that profits were not lost. In all sectors, companies are now adjusting their margins for 2022. Some companies that put annual fixed prices in their brochures no longer do so.

Timber construction, circular and biobased, became much more widely known in 2021. Prefab and timber frame construction took off enormously. All kinds of innovative start-ups are springing up, but the big builders are also joining. The beautiful award- winning buildings that were completed this year and the many partnerships that have been concluded leave you wanting more. 'It is very nice how all parties have found themselves in wood in 2021 and how they see the need for it. It is a recognition for us from all angles,' says Paul van den Heuvel, who speaks on behalf of Centrum Hout en Hout.

Circular and biobased are the words of the year in the wood industry and that will not be much different in 2022. For example, restrictive legislation and regulations require attention in 2022. 'Biobased materials require adapted calculation methods to determine environmental performance. Co2 storage must be correctly included in this,' says Paul van den Heuvel. CBM wants to prepare the furniture industry and interior construction for the future. 'We want to turn the furniture industry into a circular industry. In the coming year, for example, we will be introducing Wood Loop, an innovative organization that enables every wood processor, retailer and panel material producer to easily recycle MDF and chipboard residues,' says Kees Hoogendijk.

The year 2021 was a good year for the Dutch wood industry.
