How these developments will continue and what opportunities and challenges await the Central-European wood processing industry in terms of raw materials, markets, sales and logistics in 2022?

Raw material supply and product trends

A secure supply of roundwood forms the basis for the competitiveness of the wood industry. The industry is particularly concerned about the spruce, which has been affected by climate change. While a halving of the spruce supply is forecast for Germany by 2050, at least 6 million m3 / year cutting capacities will be added in the next few years in southern Germany, Austria, Slovakia and the Czech Republic alone. A paradox that will encourage alternative types of wood such as pine and the development of innovative products. The experts do not expect a shortage of raw materials for 2022, at best with regionally and temporally limited shortages. Without any calamities, a three-digit price level for spruce logs is expected. In general, a sellers' market will be established with immediate effect for the most important tree species. The same applies to the sawn timber sector, where there is a slight excess demand. In the sawn timber supply in Central Europe, no bottlenecks are expected in 2022.

Products such as cross laminated timber, wood fiber insulation boards and pellets, for which the rapidly increasing demand has in some cases overtaken the supply, remain in high demand. The wood industry is becoming even more global and with even more Central European key players. Substantial investment programs and company takeovers for raw materials and sales markets testify to the strong dynamism of the Central European wood industry.

Are there any more price peaks?

Even long-time insiders find it difficult to make binding statements. The fact is that some of the reasons for the price turbulence in 2021 are no longer present in the new year. Well- stocked warehouses, the learnings on the part of the buyers and a new self-confidence of the producers should have a stabilizing effect but a certain volatility remains.

Excessive prices such as € 1000 / m³ for roof battens or € 650 for fresh KVH raw material are not expected this year. Glued laminated timber and cross laminated timber could again reach price heights like in May, June 2021, but this does not affect the competitiveness of the timber construction. In addition to the winter-related amounts of damaged wood, inflation and developments in the logistics sector will have an impact on pricing.

The key questions are: How evenly do demand and demand develop over the course of the year? How do the players act in the market? And what is a normal price level anyway? In the future, we have to assume that prices will generally be significantly higher than what we had until 2020. Due to the stronger influence of the global wood markets and the experience from 2021, stronger price fluctuations with shorter cycles are expected in the next year.

The turbulent year 2021 with its price records, logistics bottlenecks and the trend reversal in the second half of the year will go down in history books.
