The situation was diametrically opposed in 2021.

Pēteris Strautiņš, an economist at Luminor Bank, ironically describes that "anyone who said a year that timber exports would double in a year would be sent for a doctor's examination". Latvian exports of wood products reached a record value of more than 300 million euros in the middle of the year. Exports of wood products continued to be very strong in the coming months, still exceeding € 300 million per month in October, but both the amount and its annual growth rate (44.6%) have already started to decline, as have export prices.

Data compiled by the Latvian Ministry of Finance (MoF) show that the increase in exports of wood and wood products was observed in practically all major markets - Germany, Lithuania, Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands. However, the increase in exports to the United Kingdom played a key role. The value of timber and timber exports to the United Kingdom almost doubled during the year, driven by higher exports of lumber and wood pellets. Overall, exports of this product group increased by 48.4% in the first ten months of this year compared to the same period last year.

Klaus also agrees that the situation in the Latvian timber industry was quite the opposite during the year, but not all companies in the industry are "floating in money" this year. He explains that the sharp rise in prices was caused by unpredictable private consumption. "If we remember in 2020, in many countries, including Latvia, but to a lesser extent, such as the United Kingdom, the United States, two things happened at the same time - people were sent to sit at home and unprecedented large amounts of support were turned on to give people an income. "In times of downtime, people did not lose their income, but even increased it due to benefits. People could not really spend while sitting at home.

He also emphasizes that the sector has seen an increase in exports in monetary terms, but not in terms of products in terms of physical exports. "It should be noted that it is not the case in the forest sector that we are jumping on the current market situation. In the furniture market, producer prices have risen sharply this year, but given that prices for boards have more than doubled, then furniture makers can talk only of a 10% increase in the price of their final product."

Swedbank's senior economist Agnese Buceniece explains that the product groups that provided the largest contribution to export growth are the ones with the most significant price increases. "Surveys compiled by the European Commission and the Central Statistical Bureau show that wood processing companies are seeing a slight decline in export orders and forecast prices starting in October. Lower prices and weaker demand mean that the role of wood products in boosting exports is likely to diminish in the near term, but this product group will also remain in the lead for some time to come. although volumes are still very high."

Growth anticipated

In general, the Bank of Latvia's experts forecast that the future prospects of the Latvian timber industry will remain without significant adjustments. As long as buyers are willing to pay a higher price, the situation in the industry as a whole will be favorable. However, prices are not high in all segments and not all downstream processors are able to successfully match cost increases with the price of the final product.

Capacity and resource constraints may cause difficulties in the near future. The question is how much free capacity is available to meet demand and how many staff are available. Staff shortages will be an acute issue for the whole economy, and Covid-19 will continue to dictate the rules to be reckoned with. The prospects for the Latvian timber industry are strong and will continue to play an important role. It also means adequate support from the state.

At present, it is still impossible to predict the future situation. On the one hand, raw material prices are not rising at the same rate as before, but on the other hand, Chinese market players are starting to buy logs in Europe at prices equivalent to the May 2021 peak. This shows that demand in China is growing, which could result in higher prices for European customers in a few months. Improving freight costs from Europe to China are also contributing to this development.

The Latvian timber industry was the sector with the fastest growth in export value last year, recovering from a difficult 2020.
