{"id":81629,"date":"2021-12-22T09:09:15","date_gmt":"2021-12-22T09:09:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/tin.happy-projects.ro\/current-trends-global-forest-industry\/"},"modified":"2025-09-19T08:56:40","modified_gmt":"2025-09-19T08:56:40","slug":"current-trends-global-forest-industry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.timberindustrynews.com\/ro\/current-trends-global-forest-industry\/","title":{"rendered":"Current trends in the global forest industry"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"article-content\">\n<p>Record-high lumber prices in North America and Europe have moved both sawlog demand and values to some of their highest levels in 25 years.<\/p>\n<p>The European Sawlog Price Index (ESPI) reached a new all-time high of \u20ac103\/m3 in the 4Q\/21 as sawlog prices continued to climb throughout the continent.<\/p>\n<p>Sawmills in the Nordic countries currently have some of the lowest sawlog costs globally, as log prices did not rise as much as they did in most other countries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Global Pulpwood Markets<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wood fiber costs rose for softwood pulp producers in the 4Q\/21 even as they fell for manufacturers of hardwood pulp.<\/p>\n<p>The Softwood Fiber Price Index (SFPI) reached $94.10\/odmt in the 3Q\/21, its highest level since 2014, and 8.1% higher than in the 4Q\/20.<\/p>\n<p>The Hardwood Fiber Price Index (HFPI) has been trending downward for over ten years since its record high in 2011 and is currently about 4% below its 30-year average value.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Global Pulp Markets<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Global trade of pulp fell in the 4Q\/21 predominantly due to lower demand in many Asian markets.<\/p>\n<p>In the back half of the year, market pulp prices have started to come down from the record highs seen in the 2Q\/21.<\/p>\n<p>The strong demand for wood products in Europe and North America has increased lumber trade during the first nine months of 2021 by about three percent y-o-y.<\/p>\n<p>In the 4Q\/21, overseas lumber imports to the US fell 13% q-o-q as US lumber prices plunged.<\/p>\n<p>Canada's total lumber exports fell about 13% q-o-q in the 4Q\/21, with shipments to China declining by over 50% in the first nine months of 2021 y-o-y.<\/p>\n<p>Despite reduced lumber demand in China, import prices have gone up because of higher lumber prices in the European and North American markets. As a result, the average Chinese import price in the 4Q\/21 reached its highest level in over 15 years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Global Biomass Markets<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wood pellet exports from Canada have gradually shifted from Europe to Asia, with export volumes to Japan and South Korea accounting for 43% of total shipments in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>The European pellet industry (already the largest in the world) is increasingly challenged to find sufficient sourcing for wood raw materials.<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Record-high lumber prices in North America and Europe have moved both sawlog demand and values to some of their highest levels in 25 years.
