But the situation remains tense and the outlook for 2022 seems impossible to predict.

Germania

In the fourth quarter, the demand for fresh spruce logs in Germany was mostly more subdued than in the summer. However, long logs and fix lengths remain in some regions in great demand and achieve consistently high prices. For long logs B/C 2b sometimes there are 105 to 110 €/m3 called up. Logs in B quality of strength class 2b are marketed for 74 to 100 €/m3. According to various forest owner associations, beetle wood is priced around 25 €/m3 below the average value of the respective range.

Pine logs are seeing mostly stable demand and pricing. B/C 2b is offered for 65 to 70 €/m3.

Oak logs continue to enjoy great popularity, especially with B 3a +. The average cubic meter here is € 142. B 4 has a range from 260 to 390 €/m3 and B 5/6 is priced between 273 and 520 €/m3. C 5 achieves an average of € 152/m3.

Beech logs are in constant demand and are marketed in B quality and strength class 4 for 80 to 115 €/m3 - 5/6 is a maximum of € 138/m3. For C quality in strength class 4, the figures are between 65 and 90 €/m3.

Austria

The Austrian sawmill industry is still very well stocked with spruce sawlogs. Demand is correspondingly subdued. Prices are still under pressure. They were again reduced by € 3 to € 6 / m3. This fact, in combination with the previously announced revision shutdowns at the turn of the year as well as the reluctance to sign new contracts by customers, do not indicate a timely recovery in demand. In November, Spruce / fir roundwood (quality B, 2b) in Austria was sold between 100 and 115 € / cubic meter.

In the pine segment there were regional price adjustments downward. Larch, on the other hand, maintains its attractive price level. Demand exceeds supply.

At the beginning of the hardwood season, the trend of recent years continues: oak is in very brisk demand despite the rise in prices. However, increased demand can also be observed for red beech compared to the previous year. Regionally there were price increases here as well. Only the best qualities are required for all other types of hardwood.

Republica Cehă

The price of wood in the Czech Republic is rising despite record logging. Previously, prices had followed an almost unbroken downward trend since the beginning of 2018.

Pine sawlog prices (quality C) are currently priced at € 52.80 per cubic meter. Spruce sawlog price (quality C) is currently around € 79.60 per cubic meter.

Compared to the previous year, pine log prices showed a strong plus of 26.5%. In the case of spruce, too, a strong plus of 55.5% can be reported compared to the previous year.

According to analysts, the development of prices on the timber market will depend on demand, not only in the Czech Republic, but throughout Europe. At the same time, wood is becoming an increasingly popular building material around the world. This is due to its natural properties and speed of construction.

In the long run, there is a risk that after harvesting and processing wood from the bark beetle calamity, there will be a shortage of this raw material on the Central European market. Therefore, even the prices of raw wood and wood products would not have to return to the levels of, for example, 2020.

2021 is slowly coming to an end and with it the most blatant price increases in this strange “Corona wood year”.
