The widespread material shortages in the UK are softening but sawn timber could both face issues going into the new year, UK's Construction Leadership Council (CLC) has warned.<\/p>\n
Though demand has fallen from the high levels seen earlier this year, supply is still struggling to keep up, according to the CLC\u2019s latest construction products availability statement. Imported materials, such as sawn timber, are seeing the largest gulfs between demand and supply, the group said.<\/p>\n
Stocks of sawn timber, which has faced\u00a0substantial shortages over the last year\u00a0and saw its price increase by 64 per cent the year to July, have improved. But \u201csignificant delays at ports both here and abroad\u201d have slowed production at sawmills in Scandinavia, where a large proportion of UK sawn timber is produced.<\/p>\n
Supplies of\u00a0sawn timber\u00a0are expected to remain uneven going into 2022, the CLC said.<\/p>\n
UK's Timber Trade Federation head of technical and trade policy Nick Boulton said the timber sector was entering a \u201cperiod of greater stability for core construction products like structural softwood\u201d, but warned some other products would remain under pressure well into 2022.<\/p>\n
