The supply situation of oak logs to French sawmills continues to deteriorate dangerously as exports to China are rising considerably.<\/p>\n

The absence of government and European measures plunges the oak industry into the biggest supply crisis in its history, FNB (France's Wood Federation) complains.<\/p>\n

The latest activity survey shows a dynamic demand for all uses but a supply of sawmills 20% lower than its needs. All qualities are affected.<\/p>\n

Evolution of stocks of oak logs in France<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

According to FNB, the supply of oak sawmills requires 6 months of stock of logs in advance to cope with climatic hazards and optimal harvest periods for this precious species. In mid-November, this stock fell to 2.8 months, forcing manufacturers to curb their activity to cope with an unprecedented supply shortage. While, traditionally, autumn is the period of restocking, since July the French oak sawmills have taken out 1 month of log reserves to meet their needs.<\/p>\n

Downstream, several industrial sectors are starting to show signs of tension in their supplies, oak sawmills having more and more difficulty in meeting the volumes requested by their customers due to a lack of sufficient log supply. In particular, the sectors of parquet, funeral and sleepers are targeted. 15% more orders and 20% less supply: the crisis will necessarily spread downstream of the sector over the months if nothing happens, FNB says.<\/p>\n

As for the export of logs, China's customs statistics for October are again very gloomy.<\/p>\n

The volume of French oak logs exported in October 2021 is 3 times greater than 2020 and 5 times greater than 2019. FNB asks the government to take its responsibilities urgently because it is the only one able to move the lines.<\/p>\n
