However, the final report was not adopted until November 13th "after extension". What significance does the result of COP26 have for forests worldwide?

The tough negotiations, which lasted all Saturday, resulted in a compromise that further weakened the already hardly concrete statements about the coal phase-out. In the end, India and China succeeded in ensuring that the report only mentions a gradual reduction in coal energy. But beyond that, too, the results of the climate conference sound like a lot of goodwill, but mostly lacking commitment.

Results for the forests

On November 2nd, the international community agreed on a worldwide deforestation stop by 2030 . However, this statement was hardly binding either, as it was not underlined by concrete measures and could easily be understood as a “free ticket for deforestation for another 10 years”.

The Declaration on Sustainable Bioenergy , signed on November 10th, was also significant . In this it was emphasized that the use of bioenergy plays an indispensable role in order to be able to reduce CO 2 emissions to zero by 2050. By 2030, sustainable bioenergy from wood should reduce global net emissions by 600 million tons of CO 2 per year and by 2050 by one billion tons of CO 2 - more than the entire aviation industry is currently emitting. An important but also ambitious goal.

Preservation of the forests of Central Africa

Another item on the program at the UN climate conference was dedicated to preserving the forests of Central Africa. The FSC-certified forest company INTERHOLCO, based in northern Congo, held a conference at COP26, which was broadcast live from the COMIFAC pavilion and hosted by Olman Serrano, President of the NRO ATIBT (International Technical Association for Tropical Timber) Minister of Forestry of the Republic of the Congo, Rosalie Matondo, was moderated.

The aim was to illustrate the cooperation between the Congolese state and the actors of the private sector in the FSC-certified wood sector and to show how this contributes to effectively preserving a forest area and ensuring the production of responsible wood products for the local and international market.

At the conference, sustainable forest management was highlighted as an exemplary model that has proven to be successful and can thus be imitated in other tropical forests in Africa, Latin America and Southeast Asia.

Sustainable forest management offers global solutions, not only in ecological terms (positive effects on the protection of biological diversity, carbon sequestration and the slowing down of climate change on a global scale), but also in economic and social terms (ensuring fair jobs, combating poverty, financial resources for municipalities, taxes for the government or support for the infrastructure, etc.).

The Congolese government called for everyone involved to be mobilized to preserve the forests. The President of the Republic of the Congo, Denis Sassou N'Guesso, said at COP26: “The countries of the Congo Basin provide invaluable services to the world through their ecosystems. But what do we get in return? Very little. Indeed, the industrialized countries responsible for historic deregulation of climate change are reluctant to mobilize the resources necessary to meet their commitments. The major obstacles in the application of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, which obliges rich countries to support climate change mitigation and, above all, efforts by developing countries to adapt to climate change, are evidence of this.

In order to give something back to Africa, public-private partnerships and alliances are essential, according to a report by the Association Technique Internationale des Bois Tropicaux (International Tropical Timber Technical Association, ATIBT). Over the years, the Republic of the Congo has created the conditions for such partnerships and introduced appropriate rules and regulations. Private sector actors like INTERHOLCO show an economic model that keeps forests alive: sustainable forest management (SFM). Sustainable forest management goes far beyond the forest concession administered by INTERHOLCO and requires cooperation between all sectors.

“We need close and direct cooperation between the private sector, governments and development institutions. We all have to pull together. Then the adjustment of the financial flows to international goals must be facilitated. Finally, the investments of the private sector have to be brought into line with the strategies of the industry ”, said Ulrich Grauert, Managing Director of INTERHOLCO.

The role that large African forests play in regulating the climate for the benefit of all humanity should be translated into measures that provide much-needed economic benefits to the African communities that these forests are home to.

A total of 150 people attended the conference. Government representatives, private individuals, scientists, investors, development agencies, international organizations and non-governmental organizations came together.

The 26th UN Climate Change Conference (COP26) took place in Glasgow, Scotland, from November 1st to 12th.
