An increasingly poor supply of raw materials endangers the potential of the renewable raw material for the domestic economy and for climate protection.

Climate change and changing environmental conditions have driven forest conversion in recent decades. With the growing proportion of deciduous trees, the importance of hardwood as a domestic raw material also grows. A current survey by DeSH among its member companies shows, however, that this development is in contrast to the current market situation: "A lack of raw material supply not only endangers existing but also future potential that hardwood can provide for the domestic economy and climate protection", DeSH Vice President Steffen Rathke explains the situation.

Critical supply situation

The DeSH survey from the third quarter of 2021 shows a predominantly good business situation for the hardwood sawmills, but the supply of roundwood deteriorated drastically: While the tense availability of hardwood seemed to ease in the first quarter over the summer, almost half of them are now reporting companies surveyed had a poor supply of round wood for the third quarter, and a further fifth had only an adequate supply of round wood. Over two thirds of the companies are thus faced with critical material availability, which could mark the beginning of a cycle that endangers the future role of hardwood in the long term.

Hardwood potential at risk

“Basically, there is more than enough hardwood in the German forests for domestic industry. But logging moratoriums and the lack of availability of personnel and machines are causing the supply from the forest to decline, ”explains Rathke. The fact that part of the wood is not available for domestic processing due to export reinforces the effect. However, an uncertain supply of raw materials restricts production, investments and the expansion of processing capacities. “As a result, there is insufficient expansion of the use of hardwood in Germany. This counteracts the political and economic efforts to strengthen the use of hardwood and endangers the development and existence of regional value chains, the creation of additional jobs in rural areas, but in particular the potential of climate-friendly hardwood products for the sustainable economy of tomorrow, ”concludes Rathke. To this end, the DeSH launched the “Hardwood +” initiative last year in order to draw attention to the blatant negative development between the political desire for more hardwood use and an increasingly poor supply and declining processing capacity in reality.

The poor supply of raw materials endangers the potential of the German hardwood industry A current company survey by the German Sawmill and Wood Industry Association (DeSH) shows the current difficult market development of the hardwood processing member companies.
