But no one can provide a one hundred percent explanation," said the managing director. There would also have been problems with the sawmills, which had reached their capacity limits. Wood was literally accumulating here that many were waiting for. There was also a kind of chain reaction to the surprisingly strong climbs. Some companies panicked and filled their warehouses. That has exacerbated the shortage and pushed the price further.

After the big price shock, however, the market has been easing for a few weeks now. The increase has slowed down and Holzbau Germany is currently saying that prices will probably settle at this level for the time being. "But timber is readily available again," confirms Kabelitz-Ciré.

Availability of timber: difficult data situation

According to Holzbau Deutschland, the fact that figures such as those from the Federal Statistical Office on timber prices are still interpreted dramatically in current reports is due to the fact that they always reflect values from the past few months and do not provide up-to- date data . In addition, producer prices for the wood are usually an issue instead of trading prices. However, retail prices vary greatly from region to region as well as in the various contracts that timber construction companies make with their suppliers. They are not always affected by the same increase in proportion as producer prices on average.

In addition, you have to see that the German construction industry is on the upswing as a whole. If you build a lot, you need and use a lot of building materials. "Here normal market mechanisms come into play. Supply and demand determine the prices, " says the managing director, who is himself a carpenter and civil engineer. In his opinion, the construction industry has come through the Corona crisis well compared to others. The drivers of the currently high construction prices are often the very high real estate and land prices and not primarily the prices for building materials.

Germany has a bonus here because it has a lot of forest itself and thus also potential construction timber. So-called calamity wood is increasingly being made usable - wood that is produced by storm damage, drought or pest infestation. The bark beetle infestation has played a large part in this in many spruce forests in recent years. The decisive factors were the dry and hot summers up to 2020. "If you cut the trees in good time and then store them wet, you can still use the infected trees without any problems," explains Kabelitz-Ciré. However, there are already capacity problems with the necessary wet storage facilities.

Construction timber and waste wood: Recycle in a way that conserves resources

Holzbau Deutschland advocates this in view of the high prices and, so to speak, as a precaution that the use of wood should also be organized more in the direction of resource conservation . "For climate protection, it is particularly important that we act in a way that conserves resources and does not waste wood, for example by using fresh wood instead of mainly waste wood for energy," the managing director gives as an example.

In order to stop the competition for construction timber and to be able to really use it regionally as a domestic raw material, a discussion about an export ban has already arisen several times . Holzbau Germany thinks little of this proposal. The federal government is also currently rejecting restrictions. Peter Aicher, the chairman of Holzbau Deutschland, sees no chance of interfering with the free trade that is applicable under EU law. "Anyone who gets more on the world market than their home market can and will continue to export," he said recently in an interview with Manager Magazin. Nevertheless, he points out that the ecological footprint of the regional raw material wood is worsened by export.

Construction timber: climate neutral compared to other building materials

"We are talking more and more about ecology and sustainability and then transport wood over thousands of kilometers instead of using it where it grew," explains Peter Aicher. The demand in this country is there. The wood is also chemically treated for transport. Wood as a building material is actually the key resource to achieve the climate goals. One reason is that wood has the property of absorbing CO 2 from the atmosphere and storing the carbon from it. This makes construction timber climate-neutral in its manufacture compared to other building materials.

This argument also increases the interest in wood among many builders. So far, however, a little more for single-family houses than for buildings for several parties. The Fachverband Holzbau still sees potential here, but also obstacles. "In some state building codes, timber construction is still disadvantaged when it comes to multi-storey construction, " explains Kabelitz-Ciré. In some places it should be stipulated that no flammable materials or only encapsulated materials may be used. "We are in talks with the building supervisory authorities to create a level playing field here," reports the managing director.

The high price of wood in spring and summer 2021 took everyone by surprise – home builders, craftsmen and manufacturers of wood building materials. In the meantime, lumber is at least more readily available again. So is the price going down too? … Continue reading →

[4716,4715,4714
3302,3945
post-81387","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-trends","category-market-analysis","category-wood-industry-prices","tag-germany","tag-lumber-prices","topic-forestry","topic-industry-prices","topic-sawmilling","topic-wood-construction","area-europe

Germany: Lumber available again; are prices going down too?
