The Russian Forest National Association of Timber Industry believes that the introduction by the European Commission of import duties on Russian birch plywood may radically change patterns in Russian exports.\u00a0The first vice-president of NAL Pavel Karnaukh noted that the situation could develop in the following scenarios: \u201cDue to the establishment of permanent duties by the European Commission, prices for Russian plywood for European consumers will rise.\u00a0In a negative scenario of the development of this situation, the vector of Russian exports may shift.\u00a0Thus, the US market, which accounts now for 15-17% of total plywood sales from Russia, demonstrates high growth rates this year: plus 29% in the first eight months of 2021 compared January-August 2020, up to 340 thousand cubic meters.\u00a0The domestic market, MENA countries and China can also increase purchases from Russian manufacturers. \"<\/p>\n
The same view is held by the Russian company Sveza.<\/p>\n
Sveza believes that the introduction of permanent duties on birch plywood will lead to its rise in price for European consumers.\u00a0Russian producers will have to raise prices.\u00a0In addition, the company notes the possibility of reorienting domestic companies to the North American, Asian and British markets.\u00a0This, in turn, may cause a shortage of birch plywood in European countries.<\/p>\n
As a reminder, Russian birch plywood is popular all over the world and is currently exported to 140 countries.\u00a0From January to August 2021, the country increased the supply of these products to international markets by 13% to 2.1 million m\u00b3.\u00a0In the geography of exports, non-CIS countries account for 91%.<\/p>\n
