At the Ligna Forum Digital, four industry experts discussed the prospects for CLT production and discussed the potential in technology, product development and sales markets for the increasingly popular wooden building elements. 3.5 million m3 \/ yr of CLT capacity is currently available globally and it will soon be possible to produce 5 million m3 \/ yr with 130 production lines worldwide.<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n

At the start of the illustrious round, Dominik Wolfsch\u00fctz, speaker for markets and the economy at VDMA, asked for a forecast of capacity developments in the coming years. Robert Falch, managing partner at Minda Industrieanlagen, is certain that the trend towards ecology and sustainability will continue to have an effect in favor of the CLT industry, as long as the structural change on the raw material side does not slow this development too much. So far, however, calamities and corona have also been driving the willingness to invest. Capacities are likely to be added, primarily close to the raw material, although Russia will increase comparatively little compared to the high availability of resources. Central Europe remains a hotspot, North America is likely to lag a little behind its own ambitions. Falch expects the construction of some smaller plants in South America, Asia and Africa. And in Oceania, the capacities currently under construction are likely to meet demand for the time being.<\/p>\n

When asked whether the current \u201cinvestment hype\u201d was still healthy, Dr. Christian Fild, President of Henkel Switzerland, ruled out any possibility of oversaturation, as demand will continue to grow and capacities will hardly keep up. He emphasized that CLT has developed from an innovation to an industrial product of the highest quality within 25 years and that the actual innovation leap with products based on it will take place in the next 5 to 10 years.<\/p>\n

The future company sizes were settled by Dr. Otto Leible, Head of the Technical Competence Center at Weinig, in Central Europe at 50,000 m3 \/ yr and upwards - with a tendency to 75,000 to 100,000 m3 \/ yr. In Oceania the capacities are currently 30,000 to 50,000 m3 \/ yr. And in the other regions, Leible expects a minimum capacity of 10,000 to 25,000 m3 \/ yr to enter the market with simpler technology and steady market development.<\/p>\n

According to Falch, the companies entering the business primarily come from the sawmill industry and timber engineering, but other, non-branch companies are also often interested. Fild sees potential mainly in the integration into engineering and planning services, especially against the background that CLT benefits from a market perspective. He also notes that slow expansion is often more successful than building a huge plant without having previously gained experience on a smaller scale. Leible also sees that the industry can benefit greatly from digitization - especially if it discovers the order-related market for itself. Fild is convinced that digital planning will take a leap in the next 5 years. This will gradually eliminate the dilemma between efficient and flexible production.<\/p>\n

With regard to adhesives, the requirements are likely to develop over time from the well-known - small application quantities, good processability low emissions - to a much more differentiated specialization of the individual products, e.g. adapted to the tree species or to the use, for example, narrow surface bonding of load-bearing elements. And the topics of \u201csustainability\u201d and \u201cfire protection\u201d will also be served more and more, Fild predicted. He sees further potential in the development of completely new connection options. The group also agreed that cooperation in development will be decisive for success in the future.<\/p>\n

On the product side, the manufacturers are aware of the combination of different tree species and the functional integration in hybrid elements, for example for the purpose of insulation, assured Falch.
